Quicken Loans Joins Forces with Project XQ

by John Smith Technician

Quicken Loans has recently done a partnership ProjectXQ, an organization that challenges America to rethink high school. The core aim of this organization is to solve some of the big issues in the country’s education system. They believe that the traditional high schools are not up-to-date. Once being the topper in the world in high school competition, America is now 23rd, with the position of our students on international exams ranging from 19th in Science to 31st in Math.

Though 95% of our 9th graders plan to go to college, less than four in 10 are actually ready for college by the time they complete their graduation. This is not a good indication in a country where 2/3rd of the jobs now need some college education. By bringing together parents, artists, students, entrepreneurs, community leaders, educators and people from other genres, ProjectXQ America is aimed at changing the way we do high school.

In a 1-hour special, “EIF presents XQ Super School Live” aired on the popular channels ABC, FOX, CBS and NBC. Quicken Loans was sponsored this program and also sent 5 of the brightest students from our SCE (Summer Career Exploration) program to be on this show.

From Detroit to L.A.

Brishonna Weeks, Zania Steward and Jaylen Woodfork from Voyaguer College Prep High School and Zariah Sams and Bobbi Jones from Jaylen Rose Leadership Academy were selected to travel to LA, California with us. These students attended school in Detroit and worked with us over the summer, learning about a number of roles Quicken loans has to offer. They stood out as excellent and were the obvious selections to be rewarded with this amazing life-changing experience.

The students and their parents flew to Los Angeles on all-expenses paid trip. With the all excitement and eagerness (especially those who were flying for the first-time) they handled everything and took this opportunity. The students along with their parents spent their first day on set at Santa Monica’s Barker Hanger where the show was being filed. Jaylen, Zania and Zariah pre-taped their segments that day. On the other hand, Brishonna and Bobbi rehearsed for their role, which was live.

For the live broadcast, celebrities including, Justin Timberlake, Chance the Rapper, Viola Davis and DJ Khaled attended. Samuel L. Jackson presented the segment, which ended with Karla Souza announcing that the students were from a program in Detroit sponsored by Quicken Loans. Quicken Loans was presented as an example to invite other businesses to be a part of our reimagining high school system.

At Quicken Loans, we do our best to offer opportunities to help the students grow to a bigger set of expectations for their future. It is our prime aim to make sure that every student takes away something that will surely improve their routine life. It is a great honor to partner with an organization like ProjectXQ America because of the common goal we both have. And the goal is to find a better way to serve our youth.
