Quartz Countertops: Maintenance and Care Tips

by Kevin Smith Author

Quartz countertops are a manmade solid surface material comprised of real quartz fragments engineered for superior strength and durability. This reliability is the top reasons to shop in Duluth for quartz countertops. Unlike marble and granite, which are strong, classic stone materials, quartz is designed for everyday use.

Of course, this doesn't mean that general care and maintenance will be unnecessary. You should still provide proper care to your quartz in order to protect your investment. Here are the techniques that you should know.

Spill Protection

Spills will happen from time to time, whether you knock over a full wine bottle or drip a little coffee while your pour your morning cup. Quartz can handle spills, and moisture will dry on the material because it is non-porous, but you should still take care to clean up spills, at the very least for aesthetic reasons, as some messes will harden as they dry, including gelatinous substances and oils. If you spill anything that is likely to harden as it dries, dry what you can, then space away from the residue with a plastic scraper. Never scrape anything metallic against your quartz countertops.

Everyday Cleaning

Clean your countertops to keep them polished and fresh for a long time. The best cleaner for quartz is a homemade solution of white vinegar and water. Use a non-abrasive sponge or rag to wipe away food particles, liquids, and more. Then, use clean, room temperature water to rinse away the solution and dry it with a clean cloth.

Stains

Some materials can stain quartz, including paint, ink, dyes, and solvents. To prevent permanent discoloration, avoid storing or using anything on the surface that is not intended for cooking or serving food. Many beauty supplies and office supplies will permanently alter the color of beautiful quartz countertops. Should a stain occur, wipe up the substance immediately and rinse it away with water. If that's ineffective alone, use a stain removal product like Goo Gone to erase the stain. Follow the product's instructions precisely.

Harsh Substances

Never use harsh, abrasive, alkaline, oxidizing, or acidic chemicals to the surface. Harsh chemicals should never be used to clean your countertops, as they can discolor the material. If you're using bleach on your floors, oven cleaner on your appliances, or Comet cleaner in your sink, never place the container on your quartz countertops, as even small residue from these harsh cleaners can stain the countertops.
