Puppy Training Tips

Puppy Training TipsSo you finally got that little puppy you have been eyeing for months. What are your plans for it now, do you know? Are you going to train it or teach it tricks? If so now is the time, you need to get it accustomed to being handled for grooming and veterinary care. So when you have free time put it in your lap and gently brush and pet it all over.

You should speak softly and gently while petting and rubbing your puppy all over. Make sure to handle its legs and paws so it will be used to having its paws handled. This will allow you to be able to trim its toe nails when it gets older. Once it is comfortable with you handling it all over it is easy to teach it to “sit”, “wait” or stay”, and “don’t jump” commands. Whatever you decide, here are some usefulpuppy training tips for you.

The “Sit” Command ~ First Step in Puppy Training Tips

“Sit” is the easiest and most useful command to teach. Since your pet is still a puppy it needs to be taught how to obey the “sit” command because it is a great way to reinforce your status as the leader. The first thing, is to be able to get its attention by showing it a treat. Take the treat and slowly move it in an upward motion above your puppies head. This will cause him to raise his head to see the treat. When your puppy notices the treat this will cause him/her to move into a sitting position as most dogs do. If your puppy does not move into the sitting position simply push down on his/her rump while you move the treat over its head. Once it’s in the “sit” posiiton give your dog the treat and make to give it lots of praise.
The “Stay or Wait” Command ~ Second Step in Puppy Training

Why is the “stay or wait” command more difficult than teaching your puppy how to “sit”? Puppies tend to move around a lot. When you teach your Puppy Training Tipspuppy to “stay or wait” you will want to start them off in the “sit” position. Make sure to do this in a place where there are not many distractions. Once you have your puppy in the “sit” position hold your hand up with your palm facing towards its face, then tell it to “stay or wait”, then move a few steps back. If your puppy stays where it was given the command then give it a lot of praise. If it moves towards you or some other place “do not shout or punish it”, simply put the puppy back into the “sit” position and start over. It may take a few times to get your puppy used to the new commands so be patient.

The “Do Not Jump” Command ~ Third Step in Puppy Training Tips

Puppies are notorious for jumping up on people. Part of that is because, the small dogs are hyper. The reason they jump up on people is because, of their excitement in seeing you. Puppies are cute to watch jumping around but it gets irritating very fast. In order to teach your puppy the “do not jump” command you need to replace the jumping with the “sit” command. Instead of pushing your puppy away just pivot so that it misses jumping on you and then tell him/her to “sit”. As soon as it obeys give him/her a lot of praise and a treat.

After teaching your puppy these simple commands you will find that your puppy will be more loveable. These are some useful puppy training tips to help you to begin to teach your puppy.
