Public Works Ministry to Digitalize Operations

by Olivia Wilson Content Writer

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The MOPW (Ministry of Public Works) announced that it is set to digitalize its Buildings Control section.

EPRIS (Electronic Permit Review and Inspection System) is software that will result in greater efficiency, responsiveness and accessibility for it will integrate, automate and streamline business processes as well as practices.

EPRIS will make it possible for the MOPW to gain and furnish information in real time, thereby making the whole process more responsive, fruitful and efficient both for internal as well as external stakeholders.

Buildings Control Officer Brent Ferguson opined that EPRIS would be introduced to transform the way building permits were processed and inspections were carried out.

"This new system has a number of benefits," Ferguson said.

"When fully implemented the length of time it takes to process a permit will be reduced from the current average of 55-75 days, down to 15 days for residential and 30 days for commercial applications on average. Patrons coming into the office to submit applications and pay for services will be a thing of the past. Moving forward payments will be made online and the monitoring of the permit applications will be more seamless."

He added: "The ability to retrieve current and archived files will also be enhanced as all files will be stored digitally. The archived files will be scanned and kept in localised cloud storage. The implementation of EPRIS will signify a watershed moment for buildings regulation in the country."

The Ministry of Public Works, in partnership with Tyler Technologies Ltd., will host the first stakeholder presentation on 28 July, 2021. EPRIS shall see the light of day six months post this presentation.
