Prepare for Marine Biology Exploration

by Kevin Smith Author

Whale and puffin research camps are one of the top marine biology and science experiences available for students. Programs offer the hands-on study of whales and other sea creatures in their natural habitats. You’ll encounter whales face-to-face and have the ability to research and explore their behaviors, lifestyles, and patterns. Few humans have the opportunity to take part in such a fascinating and life-changing program. Not only can you interact with whales, but you can also observe porpoises, dolphins, seals, and puffins. On-board marine biology equipment will enable you to examine sea creatures and explore their marine habitat. Discover a whale science summer camp opportunity for a full week of camp or up-to-a-three-week program.

Experience Excitement at Sea

While aboard the ocean ferry, experience dinner at sea followed by a special viewing of a host of puffins. A boat trip will take you to Machias Seal Island just southeast of Cutler, Maine. The area serves as a sanctuary for a full variety of seabirds. There, you will more closely observe and research the largest colony of Maine’s puffins, as well as common murres, razorbill auks, and Arctic terns. There’s a special lighthouse on the island. While on the island, you’ll experience a full picture of nature’s best sea life up close and personal.

Enjoy Games and Competitive Activities

During each day of marine biology camp, there are opportunities to interact in team-building, interactive games, mini golf, and competitions. You’ll have the chance to participate in special science labs, mammal and avian observation, research, squid dissection, and physical oceanography. You can even join in the evening campfire festivities.

Earn a Scholarship

The College of the Atlantic (COA) offers $40,000 in scholarships over a four-year period to marine biology camp alumni participants The College is located on Mount Desert Island, Maine, and is a liberal arts organization. Its home to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, and has a solid ecology-focused platform. Students must remain in good academic standing and will have the opportunity to discover marine biology at its finest. College credit course hours are also available for high school students who are serious about ecology. Discover summer camps to pursue your future in science and nature.

Consider Other Options

If you can’t participate in a full week of camp, consider alternatives such as the ability to take a weekend excursion to hike and camp remotely on a sea life island. You can also consider a kayaking trip and overnight camping. Custom programs can be planned and specifically constructed to meet your school or organization’s needs and curriculum objectives. Top off your bucket list with science summer camps and marine biology programs geared for the true science explorer.
