Practical Application Areas of Mig Welding

by Longevity Inc Industrial Mechanical
MIG welding is also known as gas metal arc welding (GMAW) and is one of the most efficient forms of welding. This process utilizes a torch that feeds a wire and is consumed and gets deposit in the weld puddle and also uses an electrode. It has a faster speed which in turn increases the efficiency of the welding work. The process is easy to learn and operate and produces neat and good looking welds. It is highly versatile welding method as it can be used on a variety of materials such as steel, stainless steel and aluminum and anything from 26-gauge sheet metal thickness to heavy structural plates.

During the welding, the weld puddle is shielded by a shielding gas which is usually an inert or active gas. The most commonly used gas is the argon gas as it doesn’t have any chemical reaction with the welding process and thus safe to use. MIG welders are used both for professional as well as personal use.

MIG welding is commonly used in the following industries among others:

Automotive industry

MIG welding is used to repair a number of different vehicles; small, large, light or heavy. These welders can provide strong welds even down to thickness of 0.5 mm. This serves as the ideal choice for assembling and repairing the parts of any vehicle. Most of the vehicles are made from aluminum which can be easily welded using MIG welding equipment.

Most of the automobile manufacturers use laser MIG welding over traditional MIG welding as the former has various benefits such as deeper penetration, stability, greater ductility and lower cost.

Construction industry

Steel is the most commonly used metal in construction of buildings, bridges, wind turbine towers and various other structures. Though, MIG welders were created for welding aluminum and non-ferrous metals but they are good for welding steel as well. Now, this welding process is commonly used in structural steel work.

Manufacturing industry

MIG welders are used for mass production manufacturing such as automobile parts, computer components, ship parts and much more. The two main reasons why MIG welding is used in this sector are:

• Firstly, it is quick and cost-effective, making it appropriate for high production manufacturing.
• Secondly, this process can weld multiple metals including aluminum, steel, carbon steel, magnesium, nickel and various other alloys.

Above mentioned are the application areas of MIG welding.
