Power Transformers and his Importance

Electricity consumption has increased manifolds in our daily lives. Majority of our household appliances work on electricity and voltage fluctuations sometimes make it difficult to run these devices efficiently and safely. It is through a transformer that this problem can be rectified. As the name suggests a power transformer is a machine which transforms the power that are supplied to systems operating on power such as a radio apparatus. More specifically it is an electrical device that converts alternating current voltage from one circuit to another with the process of electromagnetic induction. They are used in various systems to either increase or decrease the incoming voltage of electrical devices.

Before electricity is supplied at homes and offices it travels a long distance from the power plants. Since this destination is very long the voltage needs to be “stepped down” along the way. The voltage when power leaves the power plant is very high. The power s reduced to a lesser voltage when it reaches the electricity poles which make it less dangerous. Finally it reaches its destination such as the appliances we use at home, where power transformers are employed to lower the voltage further down in order to bring it to a more manageable state for use. Thus the main function of the device is to use electricity without the risk of damaging the internal mechanism of any appliance due to high voltage.

These are very delicate devices. They require a lot of accessories such as connectors, porcelain assemblies, circuit tapping switches and wire harnesses. Of these wire harnesses or cable harnesses are the most important accessories. Special wiring is required for most electronic appliances. The wiring configuration of these appliances is known as wire harness and as such can be used to transfer informational signals and operational current. There are different kinds of transformers such as instrument, resonant, polyphase and lastly audio transformers which are the most popular ones found in the market today. This device is capable of performing a number of tasks such as obstructing radio frequency, combining or dividing audio signals and distributing low and high signals to circuits of low or high voltage.

There are few things one should consider before choosing a power transformer. Firstly the device should be checked for its load size and load type. Secondly, the primary voltage and frequency as well as the secondary voltage and its capacity should be noted. Lastly, it is imperative that you determine the maximum load of power that you may need. Some countries run on 110/120 volts while other run on 220/240 volts. This very fact makes it important to choose transformers very carefully.
