Pharmacy Course after 12th and Graduation

Pharmacy is one of the highest valued professions & popular career options among the science students. Education, curriculum & teaching patterns often differ in pharmacy from country to country. In India, the academic courses in the pharmacy field begin with diploma level and go to the doctorate level. 




After you complete 10+2 i.e., intermediate, there are three available courses that one can opt-in pharmacy field.

The courses are (D. Pharm) Diploma in Pharmacy, (B. Pharm) Bachelor’s in Pharmacy & (Pharm. D) Doctorate in Pharmacy 


If D. Pharm. is taken into consideration it is a 2 years course after 12th with essential subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Mathematics). After completing the diploma, it is mandatory to get registered with the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) to be a registered pharmacist. Know more About the D. B. Pharm. is an undergraduate academic degree course that is of 4 years after 12th with essential subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Mathematics). After completing the degree program, it is also mandatory to get registered with the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) to be a registered pharmacist. D. Pharm holders can also get enrolled for a professional (undergraduate) degree course of Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm.) via a lateral entry scheme. It will be a 3-year program for lateral entry candidates.

Lastly, Pharm. D is relatively a new 6 years course in the pharmacy field especially dedicated to patient management, medication therapy, and improving the patient’s outcome. It can be pursued right after 12th keeping in mind the essential subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Mathematics). It is a Doctorate level course that includes 5 years of academic study and a year of internship or residency. 


These were the courses that one can pursue after 12th, moving forward to other pharmacy programs are:


Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate) – 3 years completing B. Pharm from a well recognized Institution.


After the graduation course, graduates could continue with either M. Pharm. or M.S. as a post-graduation academic course in various specializations. It is a 2 years duration course. One could enroll either directly to Institutions by clearing out the entrance exam or get full Scholarship through securing ranks in GATE or GPAT (Now) Entrance exam. After the Masters in Pharmacy from a well-recognized Institution, one can further pursue the research program in the pharmacy field i.e., Ph. D in Pharmaceutical Sciences or any stream of choice – It is the 3 years duration course.
