Oil Testing
by Tisha J. Professional Content WriterOne of the most important strategies a
company can develop is the planning of routine maintenance on heavy
equipment. Minimizing downtime on machinery means more profit because
of increased productivity. Oil testing is a cost-efficient method of
determining the overall health of industrial compressors, internal
combustion engines, electrical transformers, hydraulic systems and
generators. A simple oil analysis program will help companies
eliminate unforeseen repair costs through the construction of
probability models.
Analysis Of Hydraulic Fluids
Hydraulic
fluid is subjected to great pressure and increased temperatures. It
is also in contact with machine parts such as gaskets, valves and
steel surfaces. This fluid has a chemical composition that is perfect
for delivering great force upon machine parts, but over time the
integrity of the hydraulic oil becomes compromised. Depending on the
actual machine in which it is used and the amount of time the fluid
is undergoing the force of compression, loss of integrity can be
experienced. This results in less power, a higher risk of compromised
metal parts and fluid hoses, and costly repair procedures.
An
oil analysis laboratory will draw a sample of hydraulic fluid from a
machine and run a series of tests to see how well the machine
functions when a particular brand or make of oil is used. Subsequent
tests will show whether an accelerated problem with the equipment
points to eventual machine failure. Changes in the fluid's chemistry,
the presence of outside contaminants, or a loss of power when a
certain type of hydraulic fluid is used gives lab technicians the
data needed to produce a probability timeline model.
Power
Transformers And Insulating Oils
The physical condition of
insulating oil will show how well the equipment is operating. Oil
testing on the specialized fluid used to insulate electrical
transformers is an affordable method for predicting the deterioration
of the equipment. Tests include dielectric strength, acid number,
specific gravity and interfacial tension. The dissolved gas analysis
identifies the amount of hydrogen, methane, carbon dioxide, oxygen
and nitrogen present in the sample.
Industrial transformer
units slowly change the chemical composition of the insulating oil.
Repeated testing of the fluid results in an accurate behavior model
of the equipment, allowing the client to schedule routine maintenance
on the transformers without disrupting operations entirely.
Particle
Wear On Industrial Equipment
This testing procedure looks at the
metallic contaminants present in oils. Lubricating fluids contain
small particles of iron or steel. These particles are from the
machinery and give indication of when a breakdown is likely to occur.
Ferrography tests show the concentration of these particles, and the
analysis results are used to determine the overall structural
integrity of the machinery from which the sample was drawn.
A
specialized oil sample test laboratory is familiar with all types of
industrial equipment and is able to construct a behavior model for
the client based solely on the composition of the machine fluids. Oil
testing saves the client money on machine repairs and significantly
reduces equipment downtime.
