Multi-level marketing (MLM)

Multi-level marketing (MLM) is a business model in which a company sells products or services through a network of distributors who earn income from their own sales and from the sales of the other members in their network. MLMs are often associated with pyramid schemes, but they are not the same thing.

A pyramid scheme is a form of investment where each person involved recruits others to join. Money made by the new members funnels up to the higher members. Pyramid schemes are illegal because they inevitably collapse when no new members are recruited, and the majority of the members lose money.

MLMs, on the other hand, are legal as long as they sell a legitimate product or service. However, some MLMs have been accused of operating as pyramid schemes, with most of the profits being made by the company and a small percentage going to the distributors. It is important to carefully research an MLM before joining one to ensure that it is a legitimate business opportunity and not a pyramid scheme.
