MEET THE MAN BEHIND ALL YOUR GOOD HAIR DAYS

On those days when your hair is completely on point, and everything’s right with the world, you may have Shauky Gulamani to thank. The hairdresser-turned-manufacturer has been behind some of the most significant hairstyling inventions in the past three decades. Your flat iron? Shauky Gulamani’s brainchild. The thermal hairstyling brush that changed your life? Shauky Gulamani. The battery-operated trimmer that your guy is addicted to? That’s also courtesy of Shauky Gulamani. Here, the beauty visionary opens up about how it all comes together.

Q: You worked as a hairdresser, a beauty distributor and an executive with several top beauty product companies before launching LIFE Marketing. What have you learned on this journey?

Shauky Gulamani: I have been fortunate to have experienced all aspects of the beauty business, from working behind the chair and taking care of clients, to leading the distribution aspect, to running product companies. From those experiences I’ve taken away a deep understanding of what hairdressers and beauty consumers need to make their lives easier, more effective and more beautiful, and I know how to make all those things happen with the products I create!

Q: You’ve had so many “aha” moments that lead to amazing products, like the flat iron. What leads up to those moments?

Shauky Gulamani: It’s always a matter of discovering a need from a practical standpoint. It comes from doing hair, or from talking and listening to hairdressers.  Or from my own personal experience. With our new Magnum battery-operated, cordless trimmer, for example, I was on a business trip and my personal trimmer blew up because it wasn’t dual voltage. So I invented the first battery-operated clipper w the power of a plug-in. It runs for 150 hours on a AA battery.

Q: How did you get the idea for your new Beyond Styling Iron?

Shauky Gulamani: I created the flat iron years ago, and since then, I had come up with dozens of ways to refine or embellish this amazing tool. But I knew there had to be a way to reinvent it. I realized that the biggest complaint about flat irons is that they tend to dry out or damage the hair with frequent use. So I thought, what if you could cover the plates with something that prevented them from touching the hair, but still allowed enough heat through to smooth and style it? I did some research and came up with the idea of placing perforated silicone sheaths over the plates. It worked better than I could have hoped. Not only does it smooth the hair without damage, it makes it feel re-conditioned and soft—almost like virgin hair! And it dramatically reduces color fade.

Q: LIFE Marketing is your newest venture. What are your goals for the company?

Shauky Gulamani: LIFE stands for Luxury Innovation for Everyone. That sums up our mission. We believe beauty customers should have access to the best possible products to bring their artistry to life. These products should be affordable, and the quality should be guaranteed.  Our team is working hard to bring this vision to life!
