Mechanical Engineering Laboratory Instruments For Taking Measurements

by Naugra Export Naugra Export
Whether you’re a mechanical engineering student or an employee, you have to know about the measuring instruments you’ll need to do your work properly. The best Mechanical Engineering Laboratory Equipments Manufacturers enlist a collection of necessary measurement instruments in this write-up.

Vernier caliper:
The Vernier caliper is a widely used linear device with a minimum count of 0.02mm. You have to use it to measure linear dimensions, such as length, depth, diameter, etc. It’s one of the most fundamental instruments required by mechanical engineers. It consists of two types of scales – the main scale and the Vernier scale.

Outside micrometer: Also called the external micrometer, the outside micrometer is what you need to check the outside diameter of a circle based on accuracy of 0.01mm or up to 0.001mm. The Vernier-type micrometer is the best because it provides the highest acceptable accuracy of 1 micron.

Vernier height gauge: With the Vernier height gauge, you can measure vertical dimension from reference ground. It consists of a graduated scale or bar held in place in a vertical position by a finely ground fixed base. The graduated scale has a minimum count of 0.02mm, just like Vernier calipers. Also, the method of reading measurements in Vernier height gauges is the same as in a Vernier gauge.

Steel scale:
A steel scale is a single-piece linear measuring instrument that indicates two units in centimeters and inches. The centimeter division is on one side, while the inches division is on the other.

Vernier depth gauge: As you can guess from the name, a Vernier depth gauge lets you measure the depth from the surface of reference of an object. There’s a depth bar in Vernier calipers too, but you can’t use it to measure depth.

Vernier bevel protractor:
The next instrument on this list is the Vernier bevel protractor used in measuring angles with minimal values of 1 degree or 0.5 degrees. The bevel protractor is an angular measuring instrument that can measure angles with a least count of 5 inches. Manufacturers graduate the protractor dial in degrees while numbering every tenth degree. You can extend the sliding blade fitted into the dial in both directions and set it at an angle to the base.

Plunger dial cage:
The plunger dial gauge or dial indicator is one the easiest and widely used mechanical comparators. You have to use this device to compare work-pieces against a master.

Lever dial gauge: Also called the test indicator, you can use the lever dial gauge to measure sensitive contact. It can usually measure up to 0.80mm. However, a few special lever dial gauge variants can measure up to 2mm.

Engineering square: You can use a ruler to draw straight lines, but there aren’t any guarantees that the line you draw will be accurate and perfectly straight. It’s precisely where an engineering square comes into action. Also called the machinist square, the engineering square is the same in terms of size and construction as a try square.

Final words

These are just a few of the measurement gadgets you can purchase from a Mechanical Engineering Laboratory Equipments Manufacturers. However, there are many more that you need to know about.
