Malware levels crosses all limits- Says McAfee
by Mike Metsan Web ApproachAccording to a latest report by McAfee, there has been observed a great hike in Ransomware (an attack that temporarily locks your system and its entire information and asking you some ransom, mainly in the form of bitcoins to let you have your system’s access back) malicious macros and public sector accounts. Considering the figures from last few months, such malware attacks hit a new zenith with the increase in criminal activities as they ramp up their assault on new targets around the globe.
These facts have been revealed in the latest quarterly McAfee Labs Threat Report. The report says that the number of malware samples has crossed all the limits, with 57.6 million new samples recorded within past three months. The figures are equivalent to four new samples or attacks being observed every second, which shows a 10% increase on the last quarter alone.
Like the desktops, mobile malware has also increased in past few months. As per the report, a total hike in mobile to hit 21.1 million samples, which is a 60 percent hike from the last quarter. The main reason behind this is a rapid increase in Android screen-locking Ransomware.
Raj Samani, McAfee’s chief scientist
said in a report that “although attackers or online hackers always tend to find
new ways to use advanced or latest developed innovations and established
platforms against us, our industry is facing a great challenge in the effort to
influence individuals as well as organizations away from becoming their own
worst enemies”.
If consider an overall view, McAfee
labs have noticed 263 publicly disclosed security incidents in the third
quarter, which decreased by 15% from the previous quarter. McAfee, the renowned
online security services and software provided has said that more than 60% of
all publicly disclosed security incidents in the quarter took place in the
United States of Americas.
Considering the Health and Public
sector, it has accounted more than 40% of the total incidents happened in the
third quarter of this year. However, the health sector attacks growing in North
America and whereas attacks in the public sectors are on the top of the list
with major attacks in both Europe and Asia.
Apart from this, Ransomware attacks
have also been increased with new samples increasing by 36% during the quarter,
which is further hitting 12.2 million samples. This was aided by the evolution
of Lukitus, which is another version of Locky Ransomware, which hit around 23
million plus spam emails within the first 24 hours of its release. So, we all
need to have additional concerns towards the security of our data and
information.
