Male Infertility: Common Causes and Treatments for Men Struggling to Conceive

by Shivani Sachdev Founder & Director

Infertility is a common problem affecting both men and women. While infertility can be caused by a variety of factors, it is estimated that male infertility accounts for around 30-40% of infertility cases. Dr. Vishal Dutt Gour, a renowned fertility specialist at SCI IVF Hospital, explains some of the common causes of male infertility and the available treatment options.

Causes of Male Infertility:

1.      Low Sperm Count: A low sperm count, also known as oligospermia, is a common cause of male infertility. This condition can be caused by a variety of factors such as hormonal imbalances, infections, genetic factors, or exposure to environmental toxins.

2.      Abnormal Sperm Morphology: Sperm with abnormal shape or size can also lead to infertility. This can occur due to genetic or environmental factors.

3.      Erectile Dysfunction: Inability to achieve or maintain an erection can also led to infertility in men.

4.      Varicocele: This is a condition in which the veins in the scrotum become enlarged and cause a decrease in sperm count and quality.

5.      Infections: Certain infections such as sexually transmitted infections can damage the reproductive system and lead to infertility.

Treatments for Male Infertility:

1.      Medications: Depending on the underlying cause of infertility, medications may be prescribed to improve sperm production, motility, or morphology.

2.      Surgery: In cases of varicocele or obstructive azoospermia (blockage in the reproductive tract), surgery may be recommended to correct the issue.

3.      Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART): These techniques involve using sperm obtained through various methods such as ejaculation, surgical extraction, or testicular sperm extraction, to fertilize eggs outside the body. ART techniques include Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).

4.      Lifestyle Changes: Making lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, and maintaining a healthy weight can also improve fertility in men.

In conclusion, male infertility can be caused by a variety of factors, and a thorough evaluation by a fertility specialist such as Dr Vishal Dutt Gour at SCI IVF Hospital can help determine the underlying cause of infertility. Treatment options such as medications, surgery, ART, and lifestyle changes can help improve sperm count and quality, leading to improved chances of conception.
