Infertility in Men: The most common cause of male infertility? | SCI IVF Hospital

by Shivani Sachdev Director at SCI IVF Hospital

Male infertility refers to a condition in which a man is unable to father a child due to problems with sperm production, delivery, or function. It affects about 1 in 7 couples and is a common reason for infertility.

There are several factors that can contribute to male infertility, including:

1.     Low sperm count: This is the most common cause of male infertility and is defined as having less than 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen.

2.     Abnormal sperm shape or structure: Sperm that are misshapen or have structural abnormalities are less likely to reach and fertilize an egg.

3.     Ejaculation problems: Some men have trouble ejaculating or may have a low volume of semen, which can reduce the chances of fertilization.

4.     Hormonal imbalances: Hormonal imbalances, such as low testosterone levels, can affect sperm production and quality.

5.     Environmental factors: Exposure to certain chemicals, such as pesticides, can damage sperm and reduce fertility.

6.     Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes and cystic fibrosis, can affect sperm production and function.

7.     Lifestyle factors: Smoking, alcohol consumption, and drug use can all negatively impact sperm quality and fertility.

Diagnosing male infertility usually involves a physical exam, a semen analysis, and sometimes additional tests to assess hormone levels or to look for underlying medical conditions.

Treatment for male infertility depends on the underlying cause and may include medications to increase sperm production, lifestyle changes to improve sperm quality, or assisted reproductive technologies, such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF).

It's important for men to seek medical help if they have concerns about their fertility. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve the chances of conceiving and starting a family.
