Living Uniquely In God’s Image

If God created us each uniquely in His image, then why would we ever try to live as a copy of someone else? Even before we were born, God created us for a specific purpose. The Bible says, “Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”

(Psalms 139:16) The late Howard Hendricks said: “All people are born original, but most people die a copy.” Wow—that’s so true! Think about how often we try to live in the compromised position of trying to be someone else. Sure, those we admire can inspire us; however, too often we live imitating them instead of becoming who God made us.

In his book, Flourishing (2015), Dr. Stephen Graves speaks of “finding our unique voice.” When we yield our life to God, we discover our unique voice! Furthermore, our unique voice is often drowned out by the practicalities of life (survival). For example, if teaching is our talent, necessity requires us to discipline ourselves for the journey.

But—we can’t allow necessity to drown the dream! Sometimes it helps to go back in time to when we were children—before we had to squelch our dreams with “necessity.” For example, when I was a young hippie kid, I sang songs and wrote plays. I performed them with joyful abandon by the evening firelight in our teepee.

My unique voice was the song of my soul which God created in me—and it was free. As I aged, it was silenced by the practicalities, cynicism and unbelief. Now—as I draw close to God, He is unleashing it—in music, writing, and in my law practice! God is leading me back to the unique voice He created in me. God’s purpose for me is greater than I ever imagined!

God created us in His awesome image. He didn't make anyone else like us. If God took the time to create us each uniquely then why would we try to be anyone else? Divine satisfaction is living exactly who God made us. When we draw close to Him, He teaches us how to become the person He created. God makes nothing but the best!
