Life Skills that Students get From Homeschooling

by Tyler P. A Passionate Blogger - Entertainment
Traditional classrooms are orderly, scheduled and have a routine format for  instruction.  This provides students with stability, a focal point and structure as they move from one period to the next before the bell rings. This format teaches accountability, organization and responsibility as the students move quickly between classes, but there are additional skills that students don’t learn through this regimented system.  In contrast, home education has an entirely different structure that can be fluid or rigid depending on the needs of the family.  Home schooling allows room for creativity, independent decision-making and the development of other skills that are highly sought after by colleges and employers.

For most students, the transition period to becoming more independent and taking ownership of the learning process starts in middle school.  At this time, children are developing into pre-teens who have thoughts and ideas of their own. The best online homeschooling for middle school has a comprehensive curriculum of core subjects as well as the opportunity to start choosing electives on a limited basis. These ‘extra’ classes give students a chance to identify interest areas  and to start building a personalized path for their education. And in online middle school, all courses are offered through the online student portal instead of book and paper print material which is reserved for the younger grades who need instruction from parents. Online teachers are available on a part or full-time basis so students can get comfortable with distance learning but still have parents as a partial resource if necessary.

The next stage, high school, is where students can truly start to express themselves and develop specific habits and skills that they will carry with them into adulthood. Online homeschool high school programs are autonomous with a variety of schedule and flex options to choose from so teenagers can balance sports, jobs and social activities without sacrificing their academics. This flexibility allows students to prioritize for each semester, learning how to self-study (which should have started back in middle school) and manage their time.  It  teaches them personal accountability,  because their grades and GPA determine what they can do after graduation. Homeschooling online is unique because there is no teacher in the room, there are no set period times or class order because the student can work as early or late as they want and the schedule is flexible so long as the student accomplishes the work in the overall time frame allotted for the year/grade.

Parents who choose to homeschool starting in elementary should start working with their children at this age to develop and learn the habits named above so by the time they get to high school they have an established routine that can be modified if needed to account for the age and lifestyle. Life skills are just as important as a quality education and the best online accredited homeschool programs provide the perfect environment for student development to form these over a period of time. These are the skills that will stay with them as they enter college, get jobs, start families and mark their own path into the future.
