Kolhapur, definitely more than just chappals!

Kolhapur is a beautiful city in the huge state of Maharashtra. It is nestled right on the banks of the Panchganga river. There is a unique myth attached to the name of the city. It is said that the devil, called Kolhasur was diminished in this particular region by the Devi. While the Devi was about to kill the asur, she asked him if he had any unfulfilled wish. The Asur, during his few last, breathes wished the place where he was getting killed to be named after him. Hence, the name of the city was kept as “Kolhapur”. But this is what the mythology has offered to contribute to the city. It is anyways known to be quite a historic city, with many interesting pages of the history attached to the city, stitched during the rule of Bhosle Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire.

One thing for which Kolhapur is famous, and the whole world is pretty much aware of it, is the famous “Kolhapuri Chappals” (footwear). They are fine leather footwear, made from genuine craftsmanship. They are so brilliant with designs and the quality, that people from different all around the globe make sure to buy these chappals when they visit the Kolhapur city.

Kolhapur has a lot of interesting places to explore. One of the most popular among the tourists and the locals is the Mahalaxmi Temple. With the name of it, it is quite given that the temple is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity. The deity is beautiful like heaven. Her adornments include the use of diamonds and other precious gemstones. It always becomes a bonus when tourists find accommodation in the Hotels in Kolhapur near the Mahalaxmi Temple. As one of the most sought-after touristic places in the city isn’t too far to reach.

There are some very famous and food delicacies which are not to be missed in Kolhapur. The one thing that is like the food emblem of Kolhapur is Misal Pav. It is one of the most staple breakfasts of the people of the city. It is a mixture of moth beans, sev, farsan. It is a soup like gravy well mixed with tomatoes, onions, ginger, garlic and coconut. It is served with bread. The tangy and spicy flavour of recharges one’s senses and becomes the best way to start the morning.

Apart from just the chappals, Kolhapur is very well known for the Kolhapuri sarees and the very famous necklace called the Kolhapuri saaj. Hotels in Kolhapur are present in quite a good number. The rooms, the services, and the food are of the pretty good standard. Such things intangibly make the stay of tourist very memorable and make them come back to the city.
