Jyotirmath Temple

by Astro Ved Online Astrology Consultation

Jyotirmath or Joshimath is a city in Chamoli District, Uttarakhand. The city exists at 6150 feet and is also an entrance to several Himalayan expeditions and pilgrim centers in the UK. Jyotirmath is a matha or monastery in the North of India.

There are also many other monasteries in India there and seven Dasanami Akhadas. The monastery is close to the famous pilgrimage town of Badrinath. Travelers wishing to go to the Valley of Flowers National Park consider this monastery their base station. Here the temple is dedicated to Lord Narasimha, who Adi Sankara established.

It is also the temple where the idol of Lord Badri is brought because the Badrinath temple remains closed in winter. The idol remains here for six months before the doors of Badrinath open up again.

History

History says the temple became extinct after Swami Ramakrishna Tirtha in the 18th century. It remained shut for 165 years until it was revived in 1941 by Swami Brahmananda Saraswati. It was also when several Sannyasins came forward and told themselves to be the Sankaracharya of Jyotirmath. As a result, the priest Rawal was also considered the Sankaracharya of Jyotirmath temple  for some time.

The dispute about the Jyotirmath Sankaracharya seat still exists there, which began in 1953. There were two major rivals for the claim of being Sankaracharya: Swami Swarupananda Saraswati and Swami Vasudevananda Saraswati. Madhava Asrama was another claimant for this Jyotirmath.

Temples Inside Jyotirmath

It is believed that Shankaracharya established this math. The math contains the temples of Badrinarayan and Rajrajeshwari Devi. There is also a cave, which people believed to be of Adi Shankaracharya as he might have performed the penance there.

Narsinh Temple is the main temple of this math which resides Lord Vishnu. The idol here is Lord Narsinh, who is an avatar of Vishnu. There is also a belief that the right hand of the idol has now become as thin as a hair. The day when the hand breaks will be when the mountains Jay-Vijay will become one. This will also eliminate the Lord Badrinath, and he will turn into a black stone.

This black stone will appear at a new place Bhavishya Badri, 10 km from Joshimath. This will also be the place where disappeared Kedarnath and Badrinath re-appear. There is a place called Tapovan which is 10 km from Joshimath; this place is known for its natural hot water springs that tourists come here for its beautiful view of the river Dhauliganga.
