Indira Gandhi : A woman who took Indian politics by storm
by Indira Gandhi I Am Courage- Indira Gandhi, The Iron Lady of IndiIndira Gandhi was one of the most
pragmatic leaders that India has seen. Indira Gandhi was born on 19th
November 1917. She was the only child of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. She
always had an important role during the tenure of her father’s presidency where
she acted as the host of the Prime Minister during official events.
Her political life began in 1955 when she
was inducted as a member of the Congress Working Committee. She was incredibly
popular among the members of the congress and soon was elected to the honorary
post of party president.
Her political career kept on moving
forward with Indira Gandhi being elected to the Rajya Sabha. After the death of
Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri took over as the Prime Minister of India
and due to her massive popularity, Indira Gandhi was given the Information and
Broadcasting Ministry. The calm and collected self that she showed to the
people led to many people calling her the Iron
Lady of India later on in her life.
With the untimely death of Lal Bahadur
Shastri, there was a requirement of a new Prime Minister. Indira Gandhi was
chosen by Congress to lead the nation. She was challenged for this post by
Morarji Desai but she defeated him by getting more support from the party and
the parliament. Indira Gandhi became the first and only woman Prime Minister of
the country to date.
The syndicate in the congress which
comprised of stalwarts such as Kamraj, SK Patil, Sanjeeva Reddy, Atulya Ghosh
and S. Nijalingappa wanted to suppress her and use her to run the country
themselves by making her a puppet. Indira
Gandhi Iron Lady did not allow this to go on.
She put her foot down and went toe to toe
with the syndicate where she constantly strived to ensure her power becomes
more established in the government she ran as well as her party. She took many
decisive steps to ensure her power over the government as Prime Minister
remains supreme and cannot be challenged by anyone.
She took control of the situation. There
were disagreements in the party regarding the nomination of people to the post
of President of India. The syndicate was trying to put their candidate as the president
which would help them remove Indira Gandhi from power.
She remained undeterred and fought
against them, even exposing the plan they had set in place by conspiring the
election votes with other parties in the parliament. The syndicate backed Presidential
nominee never came to power and it was another victory for Indira Gandhi Iron Lady.
