India at Commonwealth Games 2018

by Shivanand Hulyalkar Maharashtra Pradesh Youth Congress

This year, the Commonwealth Games (CWG) are scheduled to be held on the Gold Coast, Australia from 4 to 15 April 2018. Also called XXI Commonwealth Games or Gold Coast 2018, it is an international multi-sport event for members of the Commonwealth. Mr. Shivanand Hulyalkar, a Congress leader is eagerly looking forward to the same. Here are some facts-

Motto: "Share the Dream"

Emblem:  Silhouette of the skyline and landscape of the Gold Coast, the host city of the games

Mascot: Borobi was named as the mascot of the 2018 Commonwealth Games in 2016. Borobi is a blue koala, with indigenous markings on its body

Medals: Australian Indigenous artist Delvene Cockatoo-Collins designed the medals, while they were produced by the Royal Australian Mint. The design of the medals was inspired by the coastline of Gold Coast along with Indigenous culture. Approximately 1,500 medals will be created to be distributed to the medallists and each measures approximately 63 mm in diameter. The medals weigh between 138 and 163 grams

If we look back, India has come a long way since it participated in the CWG in 1934 for the first time ever. Competing in fourteen of the eighteen previous Games, India has also been the host nation for this worldwide spectacle in 2010, at which Indian athletes showcased their best ever performance winning 38 gold, 27 silver, and 36 bronze medals.

In April, India will be participating in 15 different sports: athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, lawn bowls, shooting, squash, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting, wrestling, and parasports. It has tough competition from 71 other nations. “We have our hopes pinned on Indian players hopeful of excelling at Gold Coast 2018”, Hulyalkar said.

1. Sushil Kumar

Sushil Kumar is a double Olympic medallist and has won gold medals in the 66 kg events in the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games. He is hoping for a hat-trick at Gold Coast.

2. Mary Kom

Mary Kom is famous for two reasons: her love for boxing and her biopic titled ‘Mary Kom’ which is played by Priyanka Chopra. A CWG medal is the only one that has eluded the Olympian and ace boxer Mary Kom, who will be looking to fill that gap.since China and Japan are not part of the Commonwealth.

3. Saina Nehwal

The former World No. 1 in badminton is not in her best form, having had knee surgery, but she still remains a strong contender for medals.

4. Sakshi Malik

Sakshi Malik made it to the headlines on Indian newspapers and news channels by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to win an Olympic medal. This is her second Commonwealth Games after Glasgow, where she won silver. She is confident of a gold this time.

5. PV Sindhu

The badminton star will be the Indian contingent’s flagbearer at the opening ceremony as well as its biggest gold medal hope. She is currently World No. 3 and though she won bronze at the last Games, she is the favorite since China and Japan are not part of the Commonwealth.

“I wish all the very best to the Indian team. It will indeed be a proud moment to watch our players being awarded medals” Shivanand Hulyalkar said.
