Improving Efficiency With CNC Machining

by Theda Alvear Professional translation consultant

The CNC machining process can significantly vary depending on what tools are being used. There are many different machines, each designed with a different purpose. While some are used for sculpting wood and metals, others may be used purely for drilling. The basic principles of operation are the same for every device. They are connected to a computer which uses software such as CAD to yield precision manufacturing results.

Using CNC Machining

The main reason why so many companies are using CNC machines is because of their efficiency and quality. In the factory setting there is a lot of room for human error due to tiredness and boredom.  CNC machines can provide a constant stream of production and only need to be stopped for loading new materials and cleaning. While machinery is a huge investment for small scale businesses, it’s getting cheaper and cheaper to use third party CNC services.

Product Development

Before a CNC system can begin production it must be programmed. Programmers will first simulate the manufacturing process using software, and then complete a test run using the machinery before running a full batch. These prototypes can then be shown to the client and the necessary changes can be made before it moves into full scale production. What makes this method intriguing is that CNC machines can produce products that are exactly the same as each other in vast quantities.

CNC Operators

While CNC machining is largely automated, operators are still required to be on call to oversee the product production process. Operators require much less training than most forms of factory staff, which can again reduce training costs. That said it’s important for CNC operators to know exactly how to maintain the machinery just in case something goes wrong with it. Some operators will also be trained in programming and will be able to help designers to understand machine capabilities.

Home-Based CNC Machining

Due to technological advances, many home-based CNC systems are becoming available on the market. Some of them are even small enough to fit inside a garage. While buying a machine seems like a smart investment it’s important to understand that it’s not just the hardware that comes at a price; training, materials and time should also be taken into account. This makes this option far less efficient than using a third party service.

Finding Reputable CNC Services

There are plenty of ways to find a CNC service. An Internet search will bring up a lot of options. Most websites will provide free quotes through email or telephone. Choosing a CNC machining company can be difficult, especially for those who don’t possess a technical knowledge of the procedures that are involved. Smaller companies are known for providing a better level of customer service. This is because larger companies will often take on larger amounts of clients and may not have the time to give everyone the attention that they deserve. Small scale companies with their own machinery can have the same capabilities as a larger company and should not be overlooked.
