Important Things to Know Before You Decide for Home Birth

by Ankit Sharma Women's Clinic
Women have been giving birth at home for ages. It was only in the 1900s that women begun to deliver at hospitals. The trend of home births is again catching up. Modern woman, due to their increased knowledge and confidence, are increasingly choosing home for delivery.

Home births require the role of midwives or doulas.

If you have a healthy pregnancy, you can give birth at home.

Top reasons women choose home births

  • They wish to deliver within the comforts of their homes, surrounded by their family members.
  • They want to bring their baby into the world without the hospital environment, medical intervention, epidural, labor induction, and such things.
  • They feel more free at home, as they can change positions, take a shower, or walk while experiencing labor pain.
  • Some women are not satisfied with the hospital setups.
  • They want a low-cost delivery.

According to lady laparoscopic surgeon in Noida Extension, home birth is not recommended in the following cases:

  • You are diabetic
  • You suffer from high blood pressure
  • You are carrying twins or multiples
  • You have a high-risk pregnancy
  • You have undergone C-section before
  • Your baby is not in a headfirst position

Things to take care of when planning a home birth

You must talk about this to your obstet-gyne. At times, doctors recommend midwives. In other cases, you must find one. You also must find a pediatrician to examine your newborn within 24 hours.

You must have a plan B, just in case you need to be shifted to the hospital.

Conditions in which hospital transfer is necessary

  • Your labor is not progressing
  • You experience bleeding
  • Your baby displays signs of distress
  • You are unable to bear the pain

Home births have their own benefits. You are at home and your loved ones are with you. Another benefit is that you can breastfeed your baby immediately. This helps in stopping your bleeding and helping to clear mucus from your newborn’s mouth and nose.

Moreover, your baby receives one of the most powerful foods of Mother Nature – the first milk of mother. It contains disease-fighting antibodies.

It is important to have a trained or experienced midwife with you. She knows how to handle the entire delivery. Strike a rapport with her beforehand to avoid awkwardness during labor.

Please do not try to deliver at home without a trained midwife or doula. Your mother-in-law or your mother or anybody in the family might assure you that they know how to assist in the delivery. In spite of this, you must have a midwife or doula with you. Keep in touch with your obstet-gyne. If she can visit you at home, great. If not, ask her if she can arrange for a nurse. Many gynecologists even arrange for doulas.

If you are too scared to deliver at home, please don’t. It is better to deliver at the hospital where you feel rest assured that you are in expert hands.

The choice is yours. Just make sure everything is in place before you make the decision. Consult lady laparoscopic surgeon in Noida Extension
