ABSTRACT

Smiling is fun when your teeth and gums are healthy. A healthy smile not only uplifts your personality but also indicates various facts about your health. The condition of the gums indicate a variety of health conditions. To get a perfect smile, you must put efforts to keep your teeth and gums healthy. There are various ways described very well in Ayurveda to keep your gums healthy. There are some habits that must be incorporated in the daily routine to maintain and promote the health of the gums. But there are various diseased conditions that can deplete the quality of gums, one such condition is the gum recession. Let us discuss in detail regarding the condition of gum recession along with its cause, management and ayurvedic aspect through the following article.

INTRODUCTION

Gum recession is a condition in which the gums pull away from the teeth, or in simpler terms, when your gum line recedes. Gum recession can happen for a variety of reasons including trauma, periodontal disease (gum disease), and aging. If the issue is minor and you are otherwise healthy, then non-surgical treatments can help. Medium to severe cases might require surgery with crowns or implants. Gum recession is a type of gum disease which will result in making your teeth more vulnerable to various infections and cavities. There can be various causes that can result in gum recession which will be discussed as follows.

The gum recession is a very common condition which affects almost 85% of the population above the age of 65 years. Gum recession may affect one or more than one tooth. SYMPTOMS

Gingival recession - or gum recession - is when the connective tissue of your gums pulls away from the tooth, leaving exposed areas of the tooth that can cause pain, sensitivity and even damage to the tooth. There can be various difficulties faced by the patient which will vary from person to person. He/ she may feel pain or discomfort near your gums. There may be increased sensitivity to hot, cold and sweet food articles. The person may also experience increased sensitivity while flossing or brushing the teeth. DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT

The dentist will examine the condition of the gums and will investigate the amount of gum recession on the teeth. This task will be accomplished  using a special instrument known as periodontal probe. The examiner will also measure the periodontal pockets. The management of gum recession will include using desensitizing toothpaste which will help to ease the discomfort. Severe cases might require surgical intervention with crowns or implants.
