How to Motivate and Encourage Senior People who live in Old Age Home

by National NGO EDUCATING CHILDREN, PROVIDING HEALTHCARE

Senior people who are living in old age homes suffer from the deterioration of physical and mental activities at a very drastic rate. It is a harsh reality that a person’s physical and mental activities tend to decrease as he/she crosses the 60 Years mark. However, it becomes more pathetic when we see these old adults at old age homes, desperately wanting the love and care of their children. It is sad that when we see that these elder people sacrificed all their luxuries and comfort of life for the betterment of their children, however, the time when they needed their children the most, they were just left in the bars of old age room, as the children could not take their responsibility any further. Thus, even though these old people stay alive, they desperately seek for the end of their life because of their hopelessness and their immense emotional agony and pain.

However, as a young citizen of our country, we can help these old people to motivate and enjoy their life in old age homes and make them believe that they still have a lot of time, energy and resources to live their life joyously at their fullest.

Following are some of the ways in which we can help these old people in Old Age Home to motivate and encourage so that they can enjoy their remaining life to their fullest without the need and support of their children-

Encourage Small and Manageable Goals – Young individual always set their target goals which they want to achieve within a specific period of time. However, for older adults as well, there should be some goals in their life. The goals may not need to be as big and complicated as their younger counterparts, but definitely there must be a time limit set to achieve their goals.   Being goal oriented ignites the power of motivation among the older people. Goals might be as small as jogging a kilometre daily, finishing a small craft of work within a day or even to have their food and medicines at the correct time without the help and involvement of others.

Encourage Self Identity – Creating self identity is essential pre requisite for an older individual to find the motto to live happily their remaining part of the part. Every older individual, when young will surely have immense stories of his/her romance, adventure, happiness, sadness, ambitions and many more. So, if once a while, it is being asked to an elder to share some of the most beautiful stories of the book of his/her life, it can create a sense of strong identity by reliving the glorious past. We can also encourage an older person to write his/her own autobiography to make the person feel worth of his/hr life.

Encourages the use of Technology - The internet and the social networking sites are beautiful opportunities for older adults to bring an adventure in their lifestyle. If an older individual is taught how to use smart phones, desktop and laptop, he/she can use all these technologies to connected themselves to their best friends from whom they were separated decades and decades ago, they can know about the current happenings of the world and can also start sharing their pieces of stories of joy and crafts they have in them. Thus, with technologies and social media, older people can find a new motto in their life.
