How to Mentally Prepare Yourself Before You Drive?

by Sam Cameron Innovative Writer in Australia

Getting inside a vehicle and holding the steering wheel can be an overwhelming experience for new drivers. You just can’t steer away the fact that driving under the guidance of an instructor and facing the real-life scenario on your own are poles apart. Thus, you need to mentally prepare before you hit the accelerator. Here are some tips to follow before you set out.

Apply the Rules You Learned From Driving Lessons

Always remember that if you hadn't had it in you, you wouldn’t have received the driving licence in the first place. Apply the rules you have learnt from your driving school in Melton. Do you remember the familiar things to do before you start driving? Here is a list of driving checks:

  • Does the car need a refuel?
  • Adjust the driving position to make it a comfortable ride
  • Did you carry the driving licence and vehicle registration with you?
  • Have you checked the tyre pressure?
  • Did you refill the windscreen washer fluid?

Once you get these checks, half of the job is done! Trust us.

The 27-Second Factor

It’s easy to get distracted, and 3 out of 5 drivers (especially new ones) face distraction every once in a while. As per the studies conducted by surveys, it takes drivers up to 27 seconds to fully regain awareness after a distraction on an average.

Hence, driving schools in Melton instructs learners to practice safe habits like, not talking on phones while driving or avoid taking calls at intersections. Plus, putting on loud music is strictly discouraged as it “deafens” you momentarily, leading to catastrophic circumstances.

So, how can you bring back focus? Although it is quite normal for your mental pistons to not fire-up every time at the precise moments, you just need a little while to acclimatise with the driving activity. Mentally decompress by inhaling slowly before jump-starting the engine and remind yourself - you’ve done it once at the drive test, you can do it again.
