How to give a Tear-Free Bath to your Newborn Baby

Bath-time with your baby doesn’t have to be stressful! It can actually be a lot of fun for both you and baby as long as you are prepared beforehand with the right baby bath time essentials. Here is a step by step breakdown on how to give your newborn baby a relaxing and tear-free bath.

1.    1. If your baby’s umbilical cord has not yet fallen off, then you must only give your baby a quick sponge bath until it falls off. The area around the umbilical cord needs to be kept clean and dry. Simply place baby on a flat surface and gently clean skin with a warm washcloth or sponge.

2.     2. After the umbilical cord has fallen off, you can give baby the first proper bath. A baby bathtub is great for this purpose. Fill it with 2-3 inches of water and not more. The temperature of the water is very important. If it’s too hot, it can damage baby’s skin and if it’s too cold, it can be very uncomfortable for your little one. The water temperature should be around 37 deg Celsius, which is warm but not very hot. Always test it yourself before placing the baby in the water.

3.     3. Even if you’re putting baby in the tub, you need to ensure that their head and neck are supported properly all through the bath. Never leave baby unsupervised during bath-time.

4.     4. Keeping a warm washcloth on your baby’s stomach through the bath can prevent them from feeling chilly and keep them comfortable.

5.     5. Even though you want a baby to relax and enjoy the bath, always keep baby bath time short.

6.     6. Gently pour water over your baby’s shoulders to keep them warm.

8.     8. Use a mild TEAR-FREE baby bath wash or a gentle baby bath soap to cleanse their skin. Pour some out in your palm and gently massage over baby’s skin, cleaning well between creases, starting from the top and moving downwards.

9.     9. Wash baby’s face separately with a wet washcloth. Clean very carefully around the eyes and wipe from the inside to the outside.

10.  10. If you need to wash baby’s hair, use good TEAR-FREE baby shampoo and try it to keep it away from your baby’s eyes as far as possible. A no-tears shampoo is really important so that bath time is always comfortable and safe for baby.
