This is a common error that the users come across while the users are using the Brother printing machine. You can quickly solve this error by using the effective solutions that are listed below.

Check for brother printer paper jam or paper scrap.

Disconnect the brother printing machine MFCj430w then open the scanner cover followed by looking inside the device.
Then, look for a piece of trash or paper jam inside the printing machine and be sure that the paper is not blocking the printer head.
Turn the printer to the left or right to check for a piece of trash, if the printer head is already on the left side, turn it to the middle.
Now have a look for foreign objects inside there and then close the cover of the scanner and put the power switch back on the device. Clear the strip of the encoder, if the error continues.
If the printer head is on the right side, place the power cord back on the printing machine. When the LCD shows that the cover is open, click and press the exit key at least for 5 seconds.
As the printer head turn back to the middle, disconnect the power cable and remove the foreign objects stuck inside the printing machine.

2. Clean the Encoder strip

Replace the entire power cables from the wall outlet and the printing machine.
After that, Lift the cover of the scanner and look for the encoder strip.
Now, use a dry clean cloth to clean out both sides of the Encoder strip.
Clean it through from left to right and then repeat the same process again for 2 to 3 times.
As you are done with cleaning of the Encoder strip, close the cover of the scanner.
Then, attach the entire power cable back on the device and then check for the error code 48.
