How to Edit the Default Download Location in Popular Browser

After browsing downloading is the most things, anyone does on a browser. These include downloading attachments from emails, documents, or any type of files from the web. Anything you download from the internet through your browser, by default it is stored in a pre-defined location (folder) in your device storage. These downloaded files are typically saved in a folder named ‘Downloads’ in the system. However, sometimes you may want to store something, such as an important file into a specific folder, instead of the default download location or just want to change the default location to keep download files into another drive. Anything will be the purpose you can change the default download location from your browser.


Note: The instructions given below apply to browsers of all common operating system, Windows, MacOS X, Linux, and Chrome OS.

How to edit the default download location in Google Chrome

In order to change the default downloading location in Google Chrome, you’ll need to dig into its settings.

1.   Start the ‘Google Chrome’ browser on your operating system.

2.   Chrome takes a little time to loads and ready to use. After the browser loads completely, click the ‘More’ button to open the Chrome menu.

3.   Then select ‘Settings’.

If you found any difficulty in doing this, search for ‘chrome://settings’ with Chrome’s search bar to open the settings directly.

4.   After that, click on ‘Advanced’ at the end of the settings page.

5.   Go to the ‘Downloads’ heading, here you can see the current download location (folder) underneath Location.

6.   Click the ‘Change’ button next to Location.

7.   Now, browse and choose a new default location.

8.   If you want Chrome to ask for location every time when you download a file, turn the toggle on next to the option saying this.

How to edit the default download location in Safari

In the Safari browser, you can change the pre-defined download folder by using the Preferences menu. Here is how.

1.   Under the browser menu, click ‘Safari’ near the top of the screen.

2.   Now, click on the ‘Preferences’ under the opened dropdown. Instead, you can also press ‘Command + Comma (,)’ button together.

3.   Make sure the ‘General’ tab is opened in the Preferences dialog.

4.   Look for ‘File download location’ at the bottom and click on it.

5.   Click ‘Other’ in the dropdown.

6.   Now, browse and choose a new default location.

How to edit the default download location in Microsoft Edge

To change or choose a new default download folder for Microsoft Edge browser you need to go to the Windows Settings.

1.   Open the ‘File Explorer’ window. You can use search to find and open it.

2.   There look for the ‘Downloads’ folder into the left-hand side menu and right-click on it.

3.   Click ‘Properties’ in the context menu. This opens the Properties dialog for Downloads.

4.   Now, open the ‘Location’ tab. Here you’ll see the current download location with three buttons to edit it, Restore Default, Move, and Find Target.

5.   Select what you want to do, choose ‘Move’ to select a new default download folder.

6.   Click ‘Apply’

7.   And click ‘OK’.

Now, the files you’ll download from the browser will be saved into the destination folder you’ve chosen as the default.
