How to choose a scope?
by Jack Johnson DesignerThe main characteristics of
an optical sight include magnification, which can be constant or variable. The
largest volumes of riflescope sales for amateur hunters are scopes with
variable magnification 3-9x. This is a great choice of sight for the novice
hunter, allowing you to shoot at close range when hunting a game. More
experienced hunters choose optical scopes of higher magnification for hunting
at long distances - with magnification of 5-10x, 4-12x and higher.
The choice of an optical sight is determined not only by the distance, but also by the size of the target: if you plan to hunt marmots or small animals, you will need a sight with a high magnification (14 or 16 times). In order to choose the right scope, it is necessary to take into account the hunting conditions - for hunting in a dense forest it would be more correct to buy a scope 3-9x or 4-12x, and for hunting in an open field - a scope with higher magnification rates.
A parameter such as the
lens diameter is equally important when choosing an optical sight. Rifle scopes with different lens diameters are on sale -
from 24 mm to 56 mm, among which the most common are scopes with 32, 36, 40 and
50 mm lenses. The size of the scope's objective lens determines the possibility
of using it in low light conditions, so if you decide to buy a scope for night
hunting, choose sights with a large objective diameter.
An optical sight with a 40
and 50 mm lens is very popular in Europe and Russia, where there are many fans
of hunting at twilight and at night, while in the USA, for example, the sale of
scopes for night hunting is not in great demand. It should not be forgotten
that the aperture of the sight is influenced not only by the diameter of the
lens, but also by the quality of the optics: the better the optics, the higher
the price of the sight, but you should not save in this case. The diameter of
the scope body is also important, since the large diameter transmits,
accordingly, more light.
The standard figure for
American scopes is 26 mm, and for optical sights of European manufacturers - 30
mm, although there are also sights with a larger diameter case on sale. When
choosing a scope, all these indicators should be taken into account in
combination, but special attention should be paid to the quality of the optics
and the diameter of the lens.
At the same time, if you
want to buy a sight with an increased lens diameter, please note that this
indicator affects the weight and dimensions of the device and requires the use
of a high mount for the sight. An optical sight with an increased magnification
and aperture ratio is, as a rule, a heavier and larger device, therefore, in
this case, it will be necessary to take into account the type of weapon on
which it is planned to be installed, and choose the bracket correctly. The
choice of an optical sight depends on the type of weapon also because, for
example, when buying a sight for a rifle with a high recoil, it is necessary to
ensure a sufficient distance from the scope to the eye in order to avoid
injuries when shooting.
