How to Change Fog Lights

If you live in an area that becomes prone to fog, driving can pose as a hazard. That’s why cars have fog lights installed in them, to aid drivers and ensure they don’t run off on cliffs or accidentally hit other people. When your fog lights are malfunctioning, you should replace them immediately with new ones, to avoid accidents. Here’s what to do.

What You’ll Need:

  • Fog lights
  • Electrical crimping pliers
  • 1/4- inch sockets set
  • 1/4-ratchet set
  • Electrical connectors
  • Phillips screwdriver

Procedure:

Raise the front of your vehicle and support it with jack stands. Find the two wires that lead to the fog lights.

Using the electrical crimping pliers’ cutting end, cut the electrical wires found behind the wire, but leave enough for the new lights. You should leave as much wire as possible.

Once you have the remaining wire, strip the insulation off its ends with the wire stripper. You can find this at the end of the handle of the crimping tool.
Use the ratchet and 1/4-inch sockets to remove the fog lights that need to be replaced.

Using either the 1/4-inch sockets or the Phillips screwdriver, carefully install the new brackets on your new fog lights. Put the new fog lights into their proper position, then screw in the bolts. Tighten them with the ratchet and 1/4-inch sockets.
Loosen the bracket of the fog light, adjust the aim and tighten the bracket.
Use the butt connectors to attach the electrical wires to each other. Afterwards, crimp the connectors using the crimping tool.

Lower the vehicle carefully, then turn on the lights. Test your fog lights. They should shine on a wall that’s 20 feet away from where they are. The light must be two feet high, with the right slightly to the right, shining on the shoulder of the road, and the left light centered.

Don’t put your life on the line by having faulty fog lights. With these easy steps, you can replace them immediately.
