Microsoft has added this new feature ‘Windows Sandbox’ in the May update of Windows 10. The program is useful for keeping your Windows 10 device safe from untrusted applications. You can use Windows Sandbox for testing or temporarily using an unauthorized or untrusted program on your Windows 10 system. You should try this feature if you think installing an app may be risky or affect your device. Here is how to activate and use Windows Sandbox in Windows 10 May 2019 Update.

Minimum and recommended system requirements for Windows Sandbox:

Your system must have to fulfill minimum software and hardware requirements to run Windows Sandbox. Check either your computer meets these following requirements,

•    Microsoft Windows 10 Pro/Enterprise operating system

•    Minimum 2 cores processor

•    4GB minimum RAM

•    Minimum 1GB HDD space

•     Hardware virtualization

•    AMD64 architecture

How to activate Windows Sandbox on your Windows 10 PC

You can straightforwardly enable Windows Sandbox on your PC from Windows Features.

Before enabling the Windows Sandbox on your system, you need to enable hardware virtualization feature in BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) or UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) firmware. First, make sure either your computer supports hardware virtualization, you can check it with the below steps.

1.    Open ‘Start’ menu.

2.    Search and open ‘Command Prompt.’ You’ll find it at the top of the search result.

3.    Enter the command line “systeminfo.exe” into the command prompt.

4.    Hit the ‘Enter’ key.

5.    The command will run and display your system information on the screen.

6.    Now, scroll to the “Hyper-V Requirements” section and see if “Yes” is written next to Virtualization Enabled In Firmware that means your device supports virtualization and it is enabled.

If the virtualization is disabled (No), then you’ll need to enabled it in the BIOS or UEFI firmware. To access the BIOS or UEFI firmware, restart your computer, while your Windows is starting press the button (F1, F2, F3, F10, F12, Esc or Delete) according to your computer model to boot into the BIOS firmware. You can search on the web or check the manufacturer’s website of your device for more help.

Steps to enable Windows Sandbox

Here are the steps that you can use on your Windows 10 computer to enable Windows Sandbox.

1.    Open ‘Start’ menu.

2.    Search and open ‘Turn Windows feature on or off’ to access the Windows Features menu.

3.     Scroll down and look for ‘Windows Sandbox.’

4.    Click and check the box of ‘Windows Sandbox.’

5.    Click the ‘OK’ button.

6.    Now, restart your PC.

Windows Sandbox has been enabled successfully and is ready to use. Now, you can use it for temporarily installing or testing untrusted applications.

Guide for using Windows Sandbox

1.    Open ‘Start’ menu.

2.    Search and right-click on ‘Windows Sandbox.’ You’ll find it at the top of the search result.

3.    Click on ‘Run as administrator.’

4.    Now, right-click on the installer file of the app that you want to install temporarily or test and select ‘Copy.’

5.    Right-click inside the Windows Sandbox windows and paste the file on the desktop.

6.    Run the app installer file that you’ve pasted on the desktop in Windows Sandbox experience.

7.     Now, click with the screen direction and complete installation.

Once the untrusted app installed, you can use it as other applications. When you have done testing the program, click the ‘X’ button to close the Windows Sandbox experience. Terminating the Sandbox will remove all its content permanently, including the app you installed without affecting your PC.

Tips:

•    Press ‘Ctrl + Alt + Break/Pause’ button together to minimize or reopen the Windows Sandbox.

•    Press ‘Shift + Alt + PrintScreen’ button together to use high contrast mode.
