Starting a new life abroad is difficult. Finding a job in your dream country is even more challenging. Therefore, obtaining a work visa can be a daunting task. Though, applying for a work visa is certainly possible if one possesses a valid passport for a minimum of six months and can provide all related documents.

So, the question arises, how long does it take to get a work visa?

When it comes to offering a work visa to a candidate, every country follows a different set of protocols.

Let’s find out more about work visas with the help of Canada work visa procedure.

Canada Work Visa

Around 200,000 foreign-skilled employees come to work on temporary work permits in Canada each year. Canadian work visas, allow applicants to work in Canada without having to undergo point-based evaluations.

Understanding the method of applying for a Canadian work visa is key. In most cases, Canadian work visas, which are temporary and not the same as immigrant visas, are only available to those who have a job offer from a Canadian employer approved to fill the vacancy with a foreign employee.

The employer must work cooperatively with the potential employee to perform this process since a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (a document validating the status of the position) is usually required to gain a work visa.

Steps to Consider Before Applying for a Canada Work Visa

Follow these steps to apply for work visa

  1. Determine if the temporary work visa requires a passport or a temporary resident visa. These things are only required for certain prospective workers, and if possible, it is best to obtain passports and send applications for appropriate visas early in the process.

  2. Check the requirements for a Work Visa application. The specifications are position-dependent. For most jobs, the application for the visa includes a written job offer from the employer, evidence of a favourable labour market impact assessment and a certificate or proof of work experience.

  3. A passport (or another travel document) and proof of immigration status in the country from which you are applying are required for jobs that do not require a favourable labour market opinion. It may also require a medical test or a criminal background check.

  4. Get a temporary work visa application kit from the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website or from your home country's Canadian Visa office (see Resources). Fill out all the materials in the application kit and collect all the additional paperwork required for the job. Failure to complete the entire application or provide all the required paperwork can lead to a delay or cancellation of the application for a work visa.

  5. The application and the documents must be sent to the Canadian visa office, which is responsible for handling applications from your country or territory, either in person or by mail.

  6. Processing times for work visas may vary depending on where you apply from. Sending the application with all the materials required can accelerate things along.
