How is the Biogas Plant a Great Source of Energy in France?

by Vivaan Pathak Manager
Biogas is a sustainable source of energy. Not only does it aid in generating fuel and electricity, but it also saves the environment by reducing organic, agricultural, and food waste.

According to the World Biogas Association, biogas can become a sustainable industry worth £1 trillion globally. Not just that, it will also play a vital role in combating frequent climate changes by reducing 10% of emissions globally. Currently, France is fully utilizing biomethane to produce energy. According to research, the energy produced in France through biomethane in 2021 amounted to 6,417-gigawatt hours.

While researching France’s sustainability and biomethane production, surfaced an inspirational story of 5 French farmers who started a biogas plant to expand their business and supply energy to neighboring towns. The story is articulated below to understand France’s take on biomethane and energy.

Luc Jannotin, a French farmer living in Sonchamp, France, and his five farmer friends established a biogas plant beside his farmhouse. It took them 6 million dollars to set up a dome that consumes up to 30 tons of biomass daily, including agricultural and food waste, mainly barley. This biogas purification plant converts biomass to biomethane, producing tons of electricity.

Anthony Mazzenga, currently the head of GRTgaz’s hydrogen department, believes France is seeing a revolution in biomethane gas production. If everything, including local resistance, goes right, the number of biogas facilities will quickly shoot up from 442 to 1000. This way, France could be one of the leading countries to possibly replace one-third of its gas consumption with biomethane or biogases, which will be produced locally.

The French advancement in the biogas industry will set an example for countries globally by motivating them to maximise their production of renewable energies that can generate fuels and electricity while minimising the utilization of harmful gases. Apart from this, the story of farmers setting up biogas domes will inspire people worldwide to contribute to sustainable development and a healthier environment.
