Role of Biogas in the Existing Renewable Energy Scenario Discussed

by Vivaan Pathak Manager
The role of biogas in the existing renewable energy ecosystem was discussed at a two-day national training program organized by Sardar Swaran Singh National Institute of Bio-Energy (SSS-NIBE) in collaboration with the Indian Biogas Association (IBA). The training program was centered on Biogas Technology and its Implementation.

Inaugurated by Mr. Dinesh Jagdale (Director General, SSS-NIBE and Joint Secretary, MNRE), the event was well-organized. Dinesh elaborated on the role of biogas in the Indian renewable energy ecosystem. Speaking at the event, he particularly underlined the application of biogas as cooking fuel.

In association with MoPNG over the past 10 years or so, MNRE has taken significant steps to enable a smooth transition from fossil fuel to cleaner and greener energy sources- solar and biogas. Dr. AR Shukla (President, IBA) was also present on the occasion and shed light on oodles of advantages of biogas technology. It is way beyond a cleaner source of energy as its advantages extend to efficient conversion of waste into biogas and the production of its by-product- digestate which is extensively used as a fertilizer.

There is no doubt that biogas has immense potential and it is quite relevant in the Indian context particularly as India is a farming nation. There is no dearth of organic waste in our country as the generation of more than 500 million tons of agricultural waste and 200 metric tons of paddy straw underlines that.

India has the necessary infrastructure and a suitable climate for biogas production. Companies offering a hydrogen sulfide scrubber also share the same opinion.

The immense contribution of SSS-NIBE over the past 12 years also garnered applause at the event. Their extensive research has been focused on the production of biogas using various types of feed-stocks such as agricultural waste and animal waste to boot. Besides, the other focus areas of their research have been impeccable biomass management, biogas production, bottling, as well as the commercial application of carbon dioxide and methane.

The event registered the online presence of thousands of participants across India and the program was designed in four key modules named:

  • Biogas operation and maintenance.
  • Biogas upgradation & purification.
  • Biogas policy and financing.
