How is telecommunication tower design & foundation design created?

Modern-day lifestyle is not imaginable without internet and high-speed communications. The communications industry has seen a tremendous growth and development in the past few decades, that has been instrumental in the development of our nation as well. Telecommunication and wireless internet services are only possible because of telecommunication towers. Therefore, due importance must be given to telecommunication tower design & foundation.

Telecommunication tower design in India can be either self-supporting or guyed. Furthermore, depending on their material of construction, they can be either steel or concrete; based on their material sections, they can be angular or hybrid; based on the number of segments, they can be sloped or straight; and based on the cross section of the towers, they can be square, rectangular, polygonal or triangular. Because of such variety in the types of telecommunications towers, it is imperative to understand specific criteria for designing the tower foundation. Some considerations that have to be made in this regard are the height of the tower, its base width, the general configuration of the tower and the soil bearing capacity.

Many companies are involved in telecom tower foundation design in India, and these foundation designs are conceptualised and materialised according to the particular tower that is to be built. However, as a general process, theseis a series of steps that are done sequentially.

The first step is to perform a series of inspections and structural surveys to find details pertaining to elevations, ancillaries to be installed etc. Sometimes, a geotechnical investigation needs to be done. The next step is structural analysis. Both dynamic and static analysis is performed using the most modern and accepted software in the industry. This is mandatory as part of global design check. Wherever possible, an element analysis program is used. This comprehensive process enables the engineer to understand the properties and characteristics of the intended tower and its foundation.

Based on the results and reports of the design analysis, an in-depth analysis of the different loads on the proposed tower is made. These design loads include the included ancillaries, feeders, the tower, and the various supports and fixings. For each of these parameters, a combination of self-weight and the weight under the action of ice and wind is estimated. Finally, the foundation design is aimed at tower strengthening and creating a sustainable design is favoured. Because many towers exceed their limit for stress utilisation, many towers are replaced from time to time. Creating a foundation design that is sustainable and utilises materials from such towers is getting popular.
