by Get Distributors Best Plattform for Business Opportunities
In today's time, footwear has transformed from items of necessity to items of fashion and prestige. India has always been looked upon for its eye-catching traditional footwear made by its skilled artisans. Famous leather chappals of Kohlapur (Maharashtra), embroidered Juttis in Jodhpur (Rajasthan), etc., are some examples of footwear made by them. Globally, our country is the second-largest manufacturer of footwear after China and is also the third-largest consumer of various footwear, after China and the USA. Besides, this industry has employed around 1.3 million people and this figure is rising on a daily basis.

Reasons behind the growth of this industry are:

  • Fast evolving lifestyles, behavioural changes towards footwear, an increase in income, and urbanisation have played a key role in influencing the buying habits of consumers. Besides, the Indian footwear market is brand driven that is why the rise in brand consciousness is also helping in the rapid growth of this industry.

  • Consistent growing competition has prompted many global players to introduce innovative footwear that is specifically designed to enhance the user experience. Many manufacturers are making sturdy but comfortable athletic footwear made of polyurethane capsules. There are many shoes out there that have built-in sensors that track the speed, distance, and calories burned of the wearer. Many running shoes for the athletes and fitness enthusiasts come with carbon-fiber spring-like flange under the sole that helps to run or jog smoothly.

  • Increasing demand for premium and customised shoes has also kick-started the growth of the Indian footwear industry. Different international brands around the world have launched facilities that give consumers the freedom to customise their footwear according to their preferences.

  • The government has also played a crucial rule in developing India’s footwear industry. Recently the government has announced a package of INR 2,600 crore for the development of the footwear industry. This package also includes a scheme called ‘Indian Footwear, Leather & Accessories Development Programme (IFLADP)’. According to this scheme, about 3 lakh people will be trained for this industry and also, 20-30% subsidy/grant will be offered to small and medium business enterprises for various expenditures like buying machines, building plants, etc.
