Data appending has been in scrutiny by business reasons in the recent times. However, given the fact that most businesses like e-commerce giants and consulting companies have huge consumer data with name, postal code and billing address, it is still used extensively and list marketers continuously provide this service. 

Before I could go more, the practice involves taking up consumer's data where name, postal address are taken and it's matched against vendor's data to obtain email address. Now, it depends entirely on the nature of businesses and it’s need whether it’s all about the same set of customers, or it’s unlikely new customers always the business rely on. E-commerce giants wants to retain their customers from year to year, similar is the case with consulting firms and SaaS companies.

If your business involves keeping a stack of huge customer’s database and you want to ensure your emails are sent with Opt-in or Opt-out methods, it is recommended to make a practice of getting an Email appending service. The benefit is that vendors can offer data to match with demographics, psychographics and lifestyle which obviously you will have to research and look for the best firms available.

The main reminder is always test and validate data once your vendor has cleaned the records for you. Taking a sample data for 1000 and check how their services are. If not 100 %, at least a recommended 60 to 70 % is still one of the counted tracks.
