How Can I Cover My Sent While Deer Hunting?

by Carolyn Lynch Roof Crafters Local Trusted Roofer

It's no secret that whitetails have a remarkable sense of smell. After all, the number of olfactory receptors in whitetails is nearly 297 million and we have a measly 5 million. While no product can completely eliminate scent, containment, and scent control are crucial elements to a successful hunting routine. In fact, if you're looking to gain an advantage and maximize your chances of success, you have to keep in mind some fundamental principles. In the world of hunting, every second counts. So, if you’re ready to get started, here's a guide to creating an effective scent control system.

Establish a Solid Foundation

When it comes to scent management, make sure you have a strong foundation. With a huge variety of scent prevention products available today, you should take advantage of it. The good news is that even if you have just $100, you can create an effective scent control system.

To help you get started, let's break down the five basic components of this system:

  1. Laundry Room: Your laundry room is a crucial part of your scent system. Use ultraviolet (UV) and scent-free laundry detergent along with scent-free dryer sheets to wash and dry your hunting clothes.
  2. Bathroom: Use scent-free soap, shampoo, body wash, deodorant, drying towel, and toothpaste to keep your body odor to a minimum.
  3. Garage: Store your hunting clothes in airtight bags and containers to prevent any external odors from seeping in. You may even consider using an ozone closet to help kill any lingering odors.
  4. Vehicle: Use a plug-in ozone generator in your vehicle to help eliminate any odors you may have picked up on your way to your hunting spot.
  5. On your way to stand: Use scent elimination sprays, ozone generators, and cover scents to further minimize your scent profile on your way to your stand.

Use Scent Suppressant Clothes

Let’s take a look at how you can combat odor at two levels using odor absorption when it comes to clothing.

Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • When it comes to clothing, hunters usually wear two layers  the base layer and the outer layer. When you combine the odor absorption ability of both these layers, you can combat odor and become a more successful hunter.
  • Carbon-lined clothing disrupted the hunting industry around three decades ago. The first two companies that used carbon in their hunting clothing were Scent Blocker™ and Scent Lok™ Other options include Polygiene™ and silver-infused fabrics. However, when it comes to the most effective odor-absorbing clothes, Merino wool is the top choice of most hunters.
  •  Don't forget your hands, feet, and head, as these are the areas that produce the most sweat and come in contact with the environment around you. Make sure to purchase gloves and hats that can absorb odor and dry fast. Rubber boots are highly effective at absorbing scent and higher-end hiking-style boots usually come with an additional layer to suppress scent.

Odor Molecules

One of the most significant advancements in hunting technology is the portable and compact ozone generator. Although these generators are quite common in hotels and cars for years to eliminate unpleasant smells, they are now gaining popularity in the hunting community.

In case you are not familiar with scent molecules, they are the smallest units of chemical compounds, consisting of a group of bonded atoms. Ozone generators can help control scent and improve your hunting success.

How to Make the Most of The Hunting Opportunity?

The most successful hunters know that being prepared and making the most of every opportunity is key. As a hunter, every second counts and can make a world of difference between successful and unsuccessful hunters. If you are investing your time, money, and effort, it makes sense to be fully prepared at all times. Paying close attention to details and gaining extra seconds can make all the difference. That's why having a reliable scent control system can help you achieve consistent hunting success.
