How Accessorizing Can Make Or Break Your Outfit

by Alise Rivera Style Consultant & Fashion Blogger

Fashion model on a runwayOn the runway, accessorizing and accessories have been used for centuries. Accessories could range from wrist accessories like bracelets and watches to elaborate jewelry like necklaces, anklets, or earrings.

Jewelry is often utilized as an accessory on the runway because it can elevate an outfit.

"Jewelry always has many purposes, from showing one's personality to projecting a brand," jeweler Courtney Pennington told INSIDER. "solitaires and chains, pendants and everything from diamonds to zirconia, the possibilities are endless."

However, although fashion professionals wear a lot of accessories on the runway, that doesn't always translate to everyday wear.

"Clothing and accessorizing can make or break a look," Sasha Bolla, former personal stylist for Pinterest and ShopStyle and creator of the blog Styled by Sasha Bolla, told INSIDER. "

So, how do you make the best out of your accessories in your everyday life?

THREE SIMPLE RULES AND YOU'RE READY FOR ANYTHING

  • First, keep your accessories in mind. A big yellow piece of material doesn't work with a basic white blouse, but it does with a tiny party dress or a fine evening ensemble. A tiny belt can totally change the look.
  • Second, think light and a little bit of sparkle. Gold, of course, is always an option. Focusing on a one-of-a-kind piece will spark interest and appeal to your style sensibilities.
  • Third, don't be afraid to mix and match. Just think, the tassel earrings will go with the off-white sweater that you love so much, the black mini-dress that looks great with your white jeans, and the black shorts that also go great with your white sneakers.

It doesn't have to be all black or all white. And to further liven up an outfit, add a necklace and add a pair of earrings.

Travel fashion accessories

No. 1: Being daring

Clothes, especially accessories, should have a "wow" factor that separates them from the rest. The flashier, the better.

There's no reason not to be daring, even if it's a little out there. A lot of people think that a pair of gold earrings shouldn't go with a black top or a white blouse or a red shirt, but trust me, they will work beautifully. As for jewelry worn around your neck, aim to go with the trendiest necklaces, and you'll be A-OK.

Start by making sure you have a black top or shirt. Next, decide if you want gold earrings to match your blouse or are you more comfortable with more of a silver necklace and gold earrings. Finally, decide how much you're willing to risk: Just a simple gold chain with a tiny gold diamond is perfectly acceptable, but for the truly daring, you can throw on a pair of drop earrings or studs for a bit more of an edge.

If your budget allows, you can mix high and low for a unique and edgy look. Just be sure that the earrings and the necklace or ring match, that's all.

No. 2: Wear it with confidence

When you think of style, you immediately think of confidence, but it's also essential to make sure that your accessory choices match your personal style.

If you're a "talker," add a little sparkle to your outfit. If you're a "crier," wear a scarf with subdued color.

If you're into prints, wear a bold print.

No. 3: Your silhouette is key

This goes for your neck, shoulders, waist, and hips. Think of all those basic runway models from the past and ensure that your body shape is accentuated by the clothes you wear.

For example, if you're pear-shaped and have hips and a big bust, try to pair your top with a form-fitting pencil skirt. This will give your hips and bust a more flattering look.

In fact, it's probably a good idea to give yourself a good 20 minutes of retail therapy so that you can try on every possible style available to you and get comfortable with what looks good on you.

Conclusion

It's not always too straightforward with accessories. However, the process doesn't need to be complicated – you just need to know your way around the most common mistakes and learn to navigate guided by your own preferences and nuances.

Fashion is important, but it's also an emotional process. When it comes to accessories and jewelry, confidence in your own personal style is the key to enhancing your confidence and making the most out of your look.

You do you, baby.
