Hot Rolled Steel- Characteristics, Process and Application
by Aartiada Ni i m bloggerAlso known as hot worked steel, hot rolled
steel is formed when raw steel is rolled at a recrystallization temperature
(above 926°C) through a compressive force. This is done to make the hot-rolled
metal take a new shape. The process leads to the
thickening of the steel, while also changing or altering its cross-sectional
shape and area. Both cold and hot rolled steel undergo an initial hot rolling
process. The British ironmaster Henry Cort can be credited for this phenomenal
process. There are many hot rolling processes that exist today. Controlled,
profile, and ring rolling are some of the most common ones.
Characteristics
There are three characteristics that
distinguish hot rolled steel from cold-rolled steel. Products made with hot
rolled steel have a scaly surface in comparison to cold rolled steel that has a
smoother surface. The cooling of the metal from a temperature over 926°C leads
to this scaly appearance. Hot rolled steel bars have rounded edges that are not
precise. Its surface is also matte without any oil on it. Long, flat, seamless
or specialty products are some of the ways hot rolled steel is formed.
Production and Processing
After the hot-rolled metal is melted together
in a furnace, it is converted into large rectangular pieces of metal, also
known as billets. Billets are then pre-processed and beaten flat at a high
speed by employing one of the different hot rolling processes. Although the
alloy will determine the desired temperature, it must be cool enough to avoid
liquifying while also being hot enough to allow recrystallization. There is a
constant control of temperature throughout the process. The metal is then
prepared and cooled for distribution. The process is carried out mostly for the
formation of cross-sections, sheets, or tubular sheets.
Applications
Products made with hot rolled steel have wide
applications. They are often preferred at places where tolerance and shape
aren’t required. The most common applications of hot rolled steel include
vehicle frameworks, railroad tracks, wheel rims, cylinders, pipes, springs, and
guardrails.
Now that you know everything about hot
rolling and hot-rolled metal, you know whether it
suits your requirement or not. When looking for the best hot rolled steel,
trust only reliable brands such as JSW that are pioneers in the field of steel.
