Hinged Doors or Pivot Doors? Which are Best for your Home?

by Vitrocsa john Webmaster

Although pivot doors have been around the longest, hinged doors are much more common in use. However, there are situations where either type can be considered and you need to weigh up the pros and cons before making your choice.

For most internal and external openings, hinged doors are almost the automatic choice and have been for some time. Nevertheless, pivot doors are growing in popularity and can be more suitable in certain situations.

Features and Differences Explained

All types of doors have the basic function of providing access when open and creating privacy and insulation when closed. Both hinged and pivot versions are available in a wide variety of materials, formats and sizes, with different colours and finishes.

Depending on its size and weight, a hinged door will typically have two or three hinges, more in exceptional cases, with one leaf attached to the side of the door and the other to the door frame so the door can swing in either direction. Whereas hinges are fixed to the vertical edge of the door so the door hangs from them, pivots are placed in line above and below the door so they form an axis on which the door swings. Each pivot is typically 25-30% in from the edge of the door but can be anywhere up to the centre.

Since the hinges take the full weight of the door, this can cause the door to sag so the top hinge may become loose, the bottom outer corner may touch the floor and the door may become difficult to open and close. A pivot door system does not suffer in the same way but wooden doors may warp since they’re not restrained by hinges.

Choosing the Best Door

Every door has the same main purpose so choosing between the versions may be a matter of personal preference. Both types can be used as internal or external doors and hinged doors are generally mounted singly or sometimes in pairs. Pivot doors can be in many combinations and are more suited to large openings where several doors together give an impressive appearance.

Pivot versions are more likely to be used to make an impression. Their slimmer profile, due to not having to accommodate hinges, and sleek appearance mean they look great whether open or closed. They’re particularly suitable to create a transition between indoor and outdoor areas, allowing free movement and uninterrupted views.

Hinged doors tend to cost less but, if you’re trying to make an impression, customisation can soon increase the price. For the ultimate in style, therefore, it has to be pivot doors.
