The Mechanics behind Pivot Doors

by Vitrocsa john Webmaster

A typical door, the type that most people are familiar with, is hinged on one side. Two or three hinges enable the door to be opened and closed, and those hinges support the whole weight of the door, limiting its weight and the size of opening covered by a single door.

A pivot door imposes no such limitations since, rather than hanging on vertical hinges, it sits on a pivot point that is located below the door, with a corresponding point directly above, which can easily take the weight of the door. The mechanism means that pivot doors can be extremely large and heavy yet can be easily opened and closed by pushing or pulling on one end of the door with minimal force.

An Elegant and Practical Solution for any Opening

All the doors we supply and fit have perfect balance, so they move easily with a single push. That’s ensured by making the pivot point at the ideal position along the door based on its size and weight. The pivot point can be anywhere from the mid-point of the door to somewhere near its edge but is typically 25 to 30% in.

A pivot door system can provide the perfect balance between elegance, ease of use and security. With almost endless configuration possibilities for large areas, with a combination of fixed and opening panels that can be moved in any desired direction, you can create an impression of style that isn’t possible for other types of door.

Doors can have slim profile frames of stainless steel or aluminium with powder coating in various colours. They can have single, double or triple glazing, or can be fitted with timber, stone or metal panels. In short, you can have doors that are completely unique to your property and which fit in with your existing décor or make a statement that is both impressive and memorable.

Strength and Security

The elegance of low profile frames should not give an impression of insecurity — far from it. They are extremely strong, can be fitted with high security glass and can be an imposing size with enough strength to resist forced entry and cyclone-strength winds. Doors can be fitted with motorised opening mechanisms and with keyless entry that can use biometrics so that the loss of a key is no longer a problem or a threat to security. And all without spoiling the elegant lines of the pivot door system.

Pivot doors are an attractive, practical and secure alternative to other types of door. Whether a single door or a large space that needs an impressive and effective solution, these doors are the perfect answer.
