Heat Pump Repair Tips For Every Homeowner

by Kevin Harris UGI Heating Cooling & Plumbing

Heat pumps are the most important electrical device in your home and you know you cannot deny that.

You use heating pumps for your air conditioning system, as it helps in keeping your house cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

Thus, neglecting your heating pump may not be a wise decision to make. Considering the importance it holds in your house, you might as well learn a few ways of maintaining it yourself.

5 Heat Pump Repairs You Should Know

  1. Lookout for Signs of Malfunction

The first thing about heat pump repairs, is having a keen eye on the device. Lookout for any problems that might be wrong with the heat pump.

You need to first diagnose an issue to get to the root of the problem.

Is your heat pump too hot or too cold? Does your heat pump refuse to start?

  1. Diagnose the Problem

If you’ve identified the issue with your heat pump, you’re next step is to dig deeper.

If your pump fails to run, you should check to see if your fuses and breakers are in a good condition or not.

Chances are this might be an electrical error rather than a machine one.

Newer models of heat pumps come with a reset button, which makes it easier for you to try restarting it.

If your pump has one, you should try restarting it to get it back to normal.

There might be a lot of debris collected on or around your coil due to the shorter rotation of cycles. So, remove any debris left on your outdoor coil and check to see if works.

You should also keep an eye out on the temperature inside your entire house.

You know your forced-air distribution system is imbalanced when you observe that some rooms are colder or warmer than the others.

  1. Clean or Replace the Filter

You should consider replacing or cleaning your filter for optimal use.

First remove the filter by sliding or unwrapping through the blower access door that you’ll find on the outdoor unit.

Then clean the entire area using a vacuum or a damp cloth.

However, in case the grime is way too much to clean then you should know that there’s nothing you can really do about it anymore other than replacing it.

  1. Oil and Adjust the Unit

You need to ensure that the oil is timely applied to your lubrication ports.

Ensure that you find ports or holes that have the word oil near them, they will be located new motor or pulleys. Once located, use light lubricating oil on the holes.

If your heat pumps has a belt drive, then you should try to loosen it but not to the point that it slips down.

However, if the belt seems worn out, simply go ahead and replace it. Also, check the mounting bolts on your unit and tighten those that are loose.

  1. Restart the Unit

The last thing to do, after everything else is done, is finally have your system restarted.

Look for the system selector switch on your heat pump and set it to emergency heat.

Set it up for 6 hours and then set the unit back to normal its heat setting.

And you’’l know that your heat pump is now good to go!
