Grooming your cat can be nice

by TM Maria Be a king in your own kingdom

Working with cats was not a clear decision for me from the start. Despite my immense love of the felines, I saw the cats experiencing great emotional distress at the very beginning of my practice, which curbed my motivation immediately.

However, with the help of my colleague, we managed to combine the knowledge gained from our training, our observations and the notions of cat psychology to develop a completely new approach to cat management during grooming.

The current belief is that when you wash a cat, the time we have to do it is very short before the cat becomes too reactive. The groomers therefore immobilize the cat in the position that facilitates the grooming, whether he likes it or not. They increase the level of contention when necessary and proceed at different stages as quickly as possible.

Over time, we have noticed that this belief is not quite accurate. Indeed, if we think we have very little time to groom a cat, it is because we absolutely do not respect his emotions and reactions to grooming. We therefore make sure that the cat accumulates again and again a very great emotional load until it can no longer contain it at all.

Although his level of tolerance to handling is much lower than that of the dog, we have observed, through our practice, that leaving the animal a certain freedom in his choice of grooming, this greatly reduced his emotional stress. For example, the cat can choose positions that are more comfortable and we adjust our work accordingly. So we can work longer with the cat. In addition, the return home is done with much more calm.

We apply in our practice several notions of cat psychology to organize our immediate environment to make it as welcoming as possible according to feline standards! With this new approach, we ensure the cat maximum comfort during his stay at the grooming salon!

Things to consider when choosing a groomer

As grooming a cat can have a major impact on the physical and psychological health of it, here are some things to check when looking for a groomer for your cat. If you ask us about the grooming specialist, our recommendation is cat groomer Seattle.

Is the traditional approach used to groom your cat? That is to say, the prolonged restraint of your animal if it does not cooperate?

·        What training did the employees who care for your pet follow? Have they taken courses in feline psychology? How did they learn to groom cats? If it's someone who showed them or they learned on the job, I suggest you look for another grooming salon.

·        Do they keep their knowledge up to date and how do they do it?

·        Is your pet the only one present at the time of grooming? (Especially no dog, ideally no other cat)

·        Is there a lot of noise? (Dryer, back and forth ...) This is to be avoided as much as possible!

·        What is done to minimize the odors of other animals that were on site before your cat?

In addition, when you are looking for a grooming salon for your cat and you are given an appointment without asking questions about your pet and the grooming service you want, call elsewhere! The grooming of a cat, like that of a dog in fact, should not be taken lightly!
