In Vedic astrology, one of the important planet is Shani Bhagawan. Lord Shani is given much importance and various poojas and offerings are recommended to a native if in his horoscope, or Kundali
, Shani Dosha is found. Thus, whenever a learnt and expert astrologer is able to identify a Shani dosha
, Shani Puja is recommended.
Since, among all planets, Lord Saturn is the most dreaded and judgemental of one’s deeds. Therefore, if there is any dosha in a native’s horoscope
then this puja is recommended. A Shani puja nullifies the malefic effects of Lord Saturn. Lord Saturn is said to be both a giver as well as a destroyer. Shani is usually depicted as dark in colour, clothed in black, holding a sword, arrows and two daggers and is mounted on a crow, which is his vahana. Shani is also known as Sanaischarya, Shanishwara and Chaya Putra.
Some mythological story on Lord Saturn
Lord Saturn is said to be the son of Surya Deva and his wife Chhaya. The story goes like this, that once Lord Sun was married to Goddess Sandhya with whom he had three children. But Goddess Sandhya could not bear the glaring radiance of Lord Sun for long and decided to go back to her parents’ house.
In fact, before she left, she told her shadow or Chaya to mother her children and to serve Lord Sun. With the union ship of Goddess Chaya and lord Sun for sometime Chaya gave birth to Lord Saturn. Lord Saturn was omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient. Hence, he is also considered to be very strong and brave.
Lord Saturn is said to be guided by Lord Shiva. Legend has it, when the infant Saturn opened his eyes right after birth, his father Lord Sun went into an eclipse. He was born on Amavasya of Vaishakh month (equivalent to when Sun would transit over the Zodiac of Taurus Moon sign) and hence this day is celebrated as Shani Jayanti. People worship lord Saturn on this day to minimize the malefic effects of Saturn on them.
