Giving an Organised Look to Cluttered Cables

by Gerry Griffin Owner
Cluttered and disorganized tangle of cords can make a desk area look very messy and untidy. Fortunately, there are myriad ways for getting rid of the clutter of wires - desk grommets, cable ties, boxes, baskets, removal of unused devices, etc.

Nothing makes a workstation look more cluttered and disorganized than a tangle of monitor cables, USB cords and power wires. Not only do they look unprofessional and messy, but also make it difficult to find the cables of required devices when needed. However, there are several ways of giving an organised look to the cluttered chargers and cables, while making them easily accessible.

Using a Desk Power Grommet

A desk power grommet is, in general, a plastic, metal or rubber cover which can be fit in a pre-drilled hole on a desktop. USB cords, laptop and computer cables and other wires can be fed into the grommet and passed through the cavity for giving a neat, professional and tidy look to the space.

Hiding Cords in Baskets and Boxes

Baskets and boxes can be used for keeping cables and cords from cluttering wall and floor area under a desk.
  • For creating a cord storage area with a basket, a wire basket will be needed along with four screw-in hooks. The hooks can be installed under the desk and after hanging the basket from them, a power bar with all the desktop electronics plugged into it may be put into the basket.
  • A box storage can be created by purchasing a large box and putting a power box into it. Holes will have to be cut into the box for feeding the cables and creating an outlet for the power cable. The box can be stored on top of or under the desk.

Shortening the Cables

Long cables that are forming tangles under the desk can be shortened using cable ties. One may simply wind them up to shorten them to the desired length. Then, the bundle can be secured using the ties. Clips, wraps or electrical tapes can also be used if ties are unavailable.

Using Extra Drawers for Storing Power Bars

If the desk has additional unused drawers, they can be used as excellent storage spaces for cords and power bars. If there is a cavity behind the drawer, the cords can be inserted through it and plugged into the power bar.

Unplugging Unused Cords

In course of time, the area around the desk can get messy and be cluttered with unnecessary power cords and USB cables from devices that are no longer used. Clearing out those extra unused devices and connection wires can produce a lot of room for the other useful devices thereby reducing the clutter.
