by Auto Europe International Car Rental Broker

Italy is one of the most visited countries in the world due to its world renowned attractions such as the Colosseum or the leaning tower of Pisa. However, Italy offers a lot more than its famous monuments and popular cities in its mainland, with some if its hidden gems lying deep out in the sea. Italy has several hundreds of islands in the Mediterranean and two of the largest are Sicily and Sardinia, with the latter being the second biggest island in the sea just behind Cyprus. Both islands are usually left of the itinerary of those who visit Italy, missing out on the unique beauty of the Italian islands.

Sardinia draws crowds from all over the world due to its fine beaches and year-round sunshine. Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, is the main gateway to the island. While there are international flights arriving in other cities in Sardinia such as Alghero and Olbia, Cagliari has the largest airport and also has a seaport for cruise ships to dock in.

Cagliari, Italy

While Sardinia has a lot of fascinating towns and nature to be discovered, Cagliari offers its visitors a wide array of activities to keep their itinerary filled. As the main city, it is a bustling hub of culture and one many visitors choose to start their Sardinian getaway from. Below are some of the best things to do while you are in Cagliari.

Take A Dip In Poetto Beach

No visit to a sunny Mediterranean island without a trip to the beach. As a coastal city, Cagliari has a gorgeous public beach merely a stone’s throw away from the city center. A welcome break for those who explore the narrow and buzzing streets of the city, to a relaxing view of the golden sand beach and crystal clear waters.

Scale Torre dell’Elefante

Cagliari’s skyline and seascape are simply magnificent, and there is no better place to see this than at the top of Torre dell’Elefante. Located in the charming Castello quarter, it is an imposing medieval tower designed to protect the island from invaders. Its name is taken from the elephants that decorate the building, reaching the top of the tower will reward you with surreal views.

Stroll Through The Marina

For those who enjoy living a laid back lifestyle with a warm gentle breeze hitting your face and the sound of the sea gently crashing at the shore, you can spend as much town as you please at Cagliari’s charming marina. With views out to the sea and yachts stationed along the water’s edge, you can also sip a glass of aperitivo while you are at it.

Take a History Lesson At The Roman Amphitheater

Carved into a limestone rock, this Amphitheater is one of the most important Roman structure that is still standing in Sardinia, and it’s well worth the drive to get there. Its beautifully carved bleachers once held around 10,000 people during its prime, you can travel through time as you walk through the arena pretending to be a part of the show.
