Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Tungsten Rings:

by Jems Lee Jems

What’s the difference between Black Tungsten, Dura Tungsten and White Tungsten?

Black Tungsten: In pure form, tungsten carbide is gray, and great for coatings because of its hardness. Under vacuum and high temperature, thin color layers are applied on it using vapor deposition method, which results in the black color. It permanently changes the color and an onyx like deep and exotic color is obtained.

Dura Tungsten: Titanium is combined with tungsten by heating them together at 1.4K Celsius and the result obtained is known for its low weight and durability. Diamonds are used to polish them to achieve then shine and their weight is 20% less as compared to tungsten carbide rings.

White Tungsten:Through bonding, gray color of tungsten rings is converted into exotic white. 95% platinum is used to bond a coating on the classical tungsten rings, although the resultant isn’t as scratch resistant as the classical ones.

Are tungsten rings fully scratch resistant?

Durability is very well known and the shine lasts forever. Scratches can only be seen in the result of heavy measures which include corundum/diamond abrasion. However, they are brittle, but the dealers do provide warranties.

What about the engraving procedure?

Engraving is done using lasers and it’s a precision based procedure which costs a few bucks. Diamond burr is also used for the same purpose.

How to keep tungsten rings clean and what care do tungsten rings require?

Use detergent, toothbrush and a soft cloth. A normal kitchen sponge’s rough side and a good dishwasher can also be used. Make sure not to rub the platings and inlay with the sponge. And do it quickly because chemicals shouldn’t remain on the surface of the ring for longer time as the reaction can be negative.

Why to choose cobalt free tungsten rings?

As an alternative of nickel, cobalt is used as a binder by some dealers to lower the costs. But cobalt binding isn’t durable and skin friendly. If you’re concerned with the quality, go for cobalt free tungsten carbide rings.

How to remove the ring in emergency?

Loosely clamp a plier on the ring. Then remove and tighten it a little. Clamp again. And do it until there’s a crack in the material. Repeat the process on other points on the ring and it’ll break. During the process, make sure that the cracked ring doesn’t move up or down on your fingers. If there’s a gold inlay on the ring, it’s also easy to separate it by clipping. Cream and soap can also be used in normal situations.

Are these comfortable?

Yes, these are known for the comfort fit.

Tungsten or tungsten carbide rings?

The term tungsten is used generally but pure tungsten rings are weak in nature so, technically, tungsten carbide is used which is very durable.

Can rings be polished or re-polished?

Yes, you can send them to the dealer/manufacturer for polishing.

Can precious stones be fitted in tungsten rings?
