Four Easy Ways to Figure Out a Poor Venue

by Jones Davis Owner
Many event planners agree that choosing a venue for your event is one factor that can seriously make or mar the event. Some even go as far as declaring that this decision might be more important than other things like catering and even the entertainment. This might be right as it would seem like the specific type of a venue or its location might be enough to deter certain people who would have otherwise attended the event.

Most of the time, when planners are trying to choose a venue, they have a list of all the things they’d like for the venue to have. Different venues have different features, so based on the kind of event you’re trying to plan, you have a wide array of venue options. Now, as a planner, you know all the things that you want in a venue, but could a venue still be bad after fulfilling your checklist?

Trust Your First Impression

Pay attention to the first impression that you get when you try to book an event venue. The first impression doesn't have to be theatrically spectacular. However, you do have to be reasonably impressed. Even if you make the booking from a trusted service like VenueFinder, you still need to pay attention to their mode of communication, tone, and how fast or slow it is. If the customer service is poor, then there's a chance that they won’t treat you well or could mess up your event. Look out for very simple things like how they attend to you, how they interact with you, and how much they're doing to get you to book the venue.

Find Reviews

Sometimes, a review could tell you everything you need to know in a second and save you a lot of stress and future disappointment. You don’t want to base your entire judgement from what you have read online, but sometimes, the reviews could really be all you need to go ahead or be done with a particular venue. You could read a review and still find it difficult to decide. When this happens, you could then visit the place, have a talk with the manager or staff, and then see things for yourself.

Check Their Policy

Find out what their policies are and what they do and don’t tolerate. For example, there are venues that allow any external caterers. Other venues might do the exact opposite and can’t offer any internal vendors. Furthermore, there could be other rules like a maximum guest capacity, time limits, and a lot of other things. You need to ask for a current policy statement, read and understand it, and then decide if it’s really worth your time.

Accessibility

Simply put, runaway from venues that are in bad locations or have really bad accessibility. Prospective guests could decide that they would no longer grace your event if you’re promoting it for a bad venue. Apart from accessibility, the problem could sometimes be the exact area the venue is located. You want your guests to feel safe and comfortable without having to worry about anything. Choose a safe location and a great venue.

Event planners are usually overwhelmed with all the great things a venue should have that they tend to forget some other things, which, when present, could be a really bad sign. Next time you’re planning an event, look out for some of these things and make sure you’re satisfied before making a financial commitment.
